LETTER OF THE WEEK
This one comes from visitor Matt Cardin:
" . . . I hadn't been by your site recently, so I hadn't seen the overhaul that took place in March. Well, I've been there a couple of times since I got back home, and I think everything looks and feels great. Best wishes for continued success."

Matt's story TEETH* will appear in the Del Rey anthology CHILDREN OF CTHULHU, edited by John Pelan, in the spring/summer of 2001.

*Yes,writer Edo van Belkom has a novel called TEETH as well. Its a popular title - we are all scared to death of dentists.

ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID . . .
Edo van Belkom (TEETH) is singing the blues about his impressive shut-out this year.

Edo was nominated for two Aurora Awards (one for Short Work In English and English Other), one Ellis Award (short story), and one Stoker Award (Work For Young Readers category). A total of 4 nominations and He Lost Every One!

HA! WHATTA DIS!

Edo is, of course, good humored about it. In his latest newsletter he says he "still has a long way to go to meet standards for finishing second set by soap opera star Susan Lucci,"

Things are looking up for Edo however. His latest novel TEETH is now in print and hitting bookstores this June.

ANOTHER GREAT CONVENTION BECOMES A PART OF HISTORY
The World Horror Convention in Seattle WA. (or to be more precise, at the SeaTac Marriot smack dab between Seattle and Tacoma) has wrapped up for the year 2001. Chicago, Illinois will host the WHC for 2002 and by the time Kansas City, Missouri hosts WHC 2003 we'll get there in flying cars.

Our own Judi Rohrig won a special medal for outstanding service in the field of Horror and with good reason. In addition to her work here she also contributes to Twilight Tales, Lone Wolf Publications, and just recently stepped down as Czarina for the Horror Writer's Association. Richard Laymon once called her "The voice of the HWA."

As always, we will have a full photo spread of the happenings at the WHC 2001 in Seattle in the latter part of June. In the meantime, go to STORY TIME and check out the Stoker Award winners and final nominees list.

Brett Savory informed his fans today that his upcoming novelette, THE DISTANCE TRAVELED, would not be released as scheduled or by Imaginary World's Press.

Steve Saville of IWP said that he would be issuing refunds on the early book orders after the 25th of May.

Those who ordered their book through Brett will be getting their refund as soon as Brett can dish it out.

"Marvel's decided that we are going to go ahead and institute new content guidelines and a parental advisory system for our comic books," said Marvel President of Publishing Bill Jemas.

AMAZON.COM WILL NO LONGER CARRY SPECIALTY TITLES
Gauntlet Press was the first, apparently, to get the news. Amazon.com, which once billed itself as the largest book warehouse in the world - only without the warehouse - will no longer list new specialty titles.

According to Lindsay Bradfield of the Book Catalog Department Amazon.com, Inc. "We are no longer adding new Special Order titles to the Amazon.com Book Store. All new titles must be listed through our two main distributors, or through one of our Advantage programs."

Lindsay goes on to say, "It is not Amazon.com's intention to limit authors and publishers with our new submission guidelines. Our new listing requirements are competitive with other major retailers, and we feel they are fair and reasonable. "

Specialty Titles will now have to be listed with distributors like Ingram (DarkTales recently announced that they had just been listed in the Ingram distribution catalogs) or Baker & Taylor. Amazon will also list publishers/authors on their own Amazon Advantage program (membership is free), which consists of amazon.com stocking fewer than 5 copies of each title.

Amazon is the #1 book seller online with sales in over 160 countries and more than 29 million customers.

Time will tell if this new policy will be profitable or another "We sell your privacy." fiasco.

Thanks to Buddy Martinez and Barry Hoffman of Gauntlet Press for some of the info for this piece.

According to Martinez and Hoffman, all three amazon.com distribution plans require a 55% discount - from the publisher - off of the cover price.

For publishers or writers interested in contacting amazon.com's Catalog Hotline, that number is (206) 266-2952.

PICK UP ON PICCIRRILLI
Tom Piccirilli may be one of the hardest working writers in the field (all right! The rest of you shut the hell up! I know yer bustin' butt too! I'm making a point here!)

His novel THE DECEASED and his poetry collection A STUDENT OF HELL have both made the final ballot for the 2000 Bram Stoker Award.

His new Leisure novel A LOWER DEEP (part of his "Self" series) will be on sale in October 2001. You can can see the cover art on the site, Epitaphs (his webmaster, our own "Fanboy" Mike Oliveri, runs his website). Just click on it to learn more about the book.

Back in 1997, Tom first started talking about writing a western novel and bounced it off of fans and friends in chatrooms and later, message boards. Now Leisure has set a date for Tom's first western novel GRAVE MEN. Release date is March 2002.

In his newsletter, Tom says "I know that there's an even bigger stigma attached to the western field than to the horror genre, but this novel is fairly macabre and bizarre as well. Hopefully fans of my horror and mystery work will enjoy it."

When Andy Fairclough killed the Masters Of Terror website in the U.K., Tom lost his message board voice along with many other writers, now that voice is back. On March 15 -the same day that feoamante.com returned to life - Andy launched the all new HorrorWorld. Talk to Tom on his new message board there.

New short work either recently released or coming up is Dennis Etchison's MUSEUM OF HORRORS (the HWA anthology),
Richard Laymon's BAD NEWS,
John Pelan's THE DARKER SIDE,
Rich Chizmar's OCTOBER DREAMS,
Robert Randisi's BOOT HILL, and
Ed Gorman's DESPERADOES, GUNS OF THE WEST, and FELONIOUS FELINES.

Tom is workin' it!

The story represents something of a departure for Blevins, "This story is just fun," says Blevins, who has recreated her Texas hometown as the fictional Oloroso. "It's about vampires in this small town. One of them is trying to start a mafia. One of them is a vegetarian. That's the kind of story this is. Also, this is my first time posting a story as it's written. I'm really looking forward to seeing what comes of it."

MYSTERY MOVES INTO TWILIGHT TALES
It's move over horror as mystery invades the regular Monday night readings at Twilight Tales on April 23. And it's coming in threes (always an ominous sign). Alex Matthews reads from WANTON'S WEB (Psychotherapist Cassidy McCabe investigates a high-class madam's murder); J. Bard-Collins offers WHAT PRICE HONOR? (P.I. Garrett Lyons, professional fallguy, takes the stage); and Mary Harris reads THE CHOCOLATE UNDERPANTS CAPER.

Festivities begin at the usual 7:30 p.m. (EDT) at the Red Lion Restaurant & Pub, 2446 N. Lincoln Ave. across the street from the Biograph Theater, in Chicago, IL. Admission is $4 per person and it's a mystery how they can present so much for so little.

And don't forget next week, April 30, Feo Amante's own Fanboy of Fear Mike Oliveri will present A VAIN EXERCISE IN ABSOLUTION: An hour of mayhem. David David Katzman will follow with his DEATH BY ZAMBONI (P.I. Satan Donut cracks the case of TV stars, mad scientists & werewolves). Don't miss this!

NEW PLANS FOR TWILIGHT SHOWCASE
On the heels of Chiaroscuro's announcement of crawling into the sack with Leisure Books and being able to pay pro rates to its writers, Twilight Showcase's Editor-In-Chief Gary W. Conner unveiled new plans for his popular site as well.

"Effective immediately, Twilight Showcase is going to a quarterly publication schedule," Conner announced. "This will allow us to offer three cents per word for fiction and one-and-a-half cents per word for non-fiction. The new rates are effective with issue twenty-seven, and most involved parties have already been informed.

"While we are ecstatic to be able to offer pro rates for fiction, we are now closing to fiction submissions, as we are overstocked until August 1, 2001, when issue twenty-eight is posted. We will make the appropriate announcements when we again open to submissions."

Ain't It Cool News released a cattle call for help in LA for Saturday, April 28, in the filming of Don Coscarelli's (PHANTASM, BEASTMASTER) adaptation of Joe R. Lansdale's story "Bubba Ho Tep." This story follows the "real" King of Rock 'n Roll's struggle to defeat the decomposing and profane mummy from beyond, Bubba Ho Tep. And quivering his lips and swaying his hips as Elvis is none other than EVIL DEAD's own Ash, Bruce Campbell.

Here's the need AICN advertised: "To put it succinctly we need as many of you as possible in the Southern California area to come out and be extras in several carnival scenes which will be featured in the film. We need y'all to dress as 70's trailer park trash types and to be prepared to scream your head off for the King of Rock'N'Roll." Huh? Huh? Interested? Get the phone! Author/Journalist, Mark Halliday, has turned his interest in the supernatural into a novel and a website where visitors can share their own extraordinary experiences with the unknown.

Mr. Halliday of Brisbane, Australia, recently had his book THE WALK-IN published in the United States, and has now launched a website promoting not only the book, but a meeting place where people from all over the world can share their supernatural experiences with each other.

THE WALK-IN is currently being considered by US screenwriters in preparation for film production.

"It was while conducting interviews for a regular column with my local newspaper, that I came across a true story that inspired my novel," Mr. Halliday says. "I interviewed an individual who began to relate a tale regarding someone who had been taken over by the spirit of another. "He called this process walking-in. Apparently one spirit walks-out of a body when he can no longer continue to cope with life, leaving the door open for another to take his place." The person's soul leaves the body and another slips right in. This change is always accompanied by a change in the person's behavior. This change can be subtle, but is most often dramatic as the person begins to take on the personality of the entity that now resides within. This is what is commonly referred to as a "WALK-IN."

THE WALK-IN is the story of one woman's violent ex-husband, who returns from the grave and "walks-in" on her new husband in order to reek the revenge that he vowed with his dying breath.

CHIAROSCURO JOINS WITH LEISURE
When Brett Savory stepped down as head honcho at Chiaroscuro, who could have thought that would be a good thing?

Patricia MacComber was given the reins to run the site and she has done a great job, both in keeping the original vision and feel of the site as well as bringing, little by little, her own sense of flair to the mix.

But Brett has not been resting on his laurels as El Presidente. Instead, he had the time to pursue administrative duties. That is usually a vague term but Brett shows results. April 4, Judi Rohrig reported that Leisure and Chiaroscuro announced a partnership. This was on a temporary hold until Leisure had finished their Horror section of their site. That is complete and the word is out. Leisure is now the Sponsor of Chiaroscuro.

Leisure is a division of Dorchester Publishing, a publisher of Romance Novels, and has found a new and profitable audience in Horror Literature.

STOKER NOMINATIONS ARE FINAL
The Stoker rules say: "Once the final ballot has been mailed, the Secretary of HWA, or such other person as the President designates, will prepare and issue a press release listing the finalists. The contents of the ballot will be reported in the HWA newsletter, and by any other means convenient to the organization, including but not limited to e-mail bulletins and a listing on the World Wide Web."

Well, the ballots are indeed in the mail, the voting members have been advised of their choices on the Final Ballot, and President David Niall Wilson has moved that the body of members and the public in general be advised of the nominations for the Horror Writers Association's 2000 awards for outstanding writing in the dark fantasy/horror/occult genre, the Bram Stokers.

JOEY RAMONE IS DEAD
Back in the early 1970s, while punk was still getting overdressed and having its hair done, the RAMONES were banging away in clubs and making a noise that can only be described as Fast and Furious. Record companies didn't hear a single but signed them up all the same because surely anyone with this much energy was bound to produce SOMETHING!

The RAMONES had the distinction of shaking up not only the record companies (as they were called at the time), but the public as well. Clean, to-the-point-then-stop songs like BLITZKRIEG BOP, BEAT ON THE BRAT, SHEENA WAS A PUNK ROCKER and I WANNA BE SEDATED, started sweeping away all the seventies clutter of overproduced sound, over-indulgent shows, and the aimless wandering of potty break-for-the-band guitar and drum solos. Even the No Bullshit Frank Zappa found himself coming up short compared to the hard driving sound of the RAMONES.

Heavy Metal? No, but few Metal bands of any stripe played it faster, rawer or with more brutality - brutality in the music, not just the words. Many musicians today who count the RAMONES among their influences say,
"The RAMONES saved Rock and Roll."

Joey Ramone died of cancer April 15 at the age of 49.

Report by John Ford and Andy Fairclough
On Saturday 21st July 2001 a huge gathering of writers is to be held in Birmingham, UK. The event is being jointly organised by Horror World/Terror Tales websites. At this time it looks as though the Britannia Hotel will be the likely venue, but we may change this if we have too many bookings.

Andy Fairclough and I will work together to bring about this event, which will include a one night stay at the hotel. If you would like to come along and enter into a delicious alcohol haze with us for a couple of days, please e-mail me at this address so we can compile a list of names for people requiring rooms. Please state if you require a double or single room. (Estimated cost is around £35 inc breakfast for a sinlge ensuite room). Anyone just wishing to attend for the day will also be very welcome.

On a further matter, which many of you may find totally shocking, we have to inform you that World Of Horror and Terror Tales websites have now entered into partnership. We will be sharing links and certain pages in the future, while also maintaining our own unique identities. This action is being taken to help bring about a strengthening of both websites, and a possible third party is liable to be brought into this amalgamation. Thanks for your time, and we hope to see you all in Birmingham on Saturday July 21st!

LEISURE ENDS CHIAROSCURO'S LONELINESS
It's been a good week for Chiaroscuro! On Monday, the writers' website was nominated for a 2000 Bram Stoker Award in the Other Media Category. Leisure is currently in the middle of revamping its website, including its horror section, and once the redesign is complete, we'll be kicking the partnership into high gear."

Later, Macomber also announced that ChiZine, the monthly magazine, would begin paying pro rates for fiction (3 cents a word) and poetry ($3 a poem).

It should also be noted that both the main site and the magazine have new URLs: Chiaroscuro is now http://thechiaroscuro.com,

JOHN SHIRLEY - DARKNESS DIVIDED: Stealth's first original-publication short fiction collection! Of Shirley's earlier, award-winning collection BLACK BUTTERFLIES (a 1998 Book of the Year), Publishers Weekly wrote: "[F]ew writers-if any-handle SF, dark fantasy and psychological horror alike with as much panache as Shirley. But there's depth beneath the scintillating surface, as Shirley plumbs not just the mind but also the soul..." DARKNESS DIVIDED's 22 dark tales of new noir, science fiction, fantasy, and crime, demonstrate humankind's evolution from where we were and where we are, to where we have yet to be.

F. PAUL WILSON - AN ENEMY OF THE STATE: The heart and cradle of F. Paul Wilson's LaNague series -- the story of the apocalyptic birth of the LaNague Federation and Peter LaNague's unique revolution that spawned it. A book that literally changed people's lives. Long unavailable -- except to those willing to pay a hefty price for a used book -- An Enemy of the State is another SF classic given new life by Stealth Press. The Stealth edition includes a new preface by the author and two related LaNague Federation short stories: "Ratman" - the author's first professional sale as well as the very first LaNague Federation story - and "Lipidleggin'" - a 1978 story featuring a certain ancestor Peter LaNague is trying to trace in Enemy.

CHELSEA QUINN YARBRO - THE PALACE: The sensual and mysterious legend of Saint-Germain lives on in Book Two of Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's superb series. Peopled by such unforgettable real-life figures as the de Medicis and Sandro Botticelli, The Palace evokes Renaissance Italy in all its dangerous glory, as it weaves a darkly erotic spell of love, power, obsession and seduction.

writer Richard Laymon was a prophet almost entirely without honour in his own country. This despite the fact that his first published novel The Cellar (1980) was the very epitome of American Gothic grisliness - vile troglodytish creatures dwelling far beneath the site of a gruesome slaughter -scene emerge at intervals to terrorise the local inhabitants, maiming and killing the males, sexually enslaving the females.

Additional Guest Of Honor Named To World Horror Convention 2001

He may be just Jay Clarke at home, but to millions of readers he's Michael Slade, author of the just released HANGMAN (co-authored this go-round with daughter Rebecca), BURNT BONES, and PRIMAL SCREAM among other titles. Now Clarke has been added to the line up of Guests of Honor at the May 25-28 World Horror Convention in Seattle, Washington.

The death of Richard Laymon left WHC2001 short an author Guest of Honor (Simon Clark is the Foreign Author Guest of Honor), but Laymon is NOT being replaced; a special memorial is planned and all literature for the convention will continue to list Laymon as the homeboy GoH. Negotiations had already been underway to attract Clarke, who is an attorney with an extensive background in police procedure and forensics, to the weekend of horror. It just makes the offerings a little stronger with his addition. Any fan of horror is welcome to attend the four-day convention to be held at the Seattle Marriott Sea-Tac Airport Hotel.

WHEN I KILLED FEO AMANTE
In November of 2000, I did so because the site, as it was orignally designed, could no longer handle the traffic or the proper order of its ever-growing files of reviews, stories, art, etc. After I announced its impending doom I asked folks what they liked best about the site, what they hated most, and what they hoped to see in the re-birth of feoamante.com in 2001. I received many cool e-mails (as well as a umber of hate ones for having killed off the site), but my favorite came from Mark West.

Hi Feo

Caught the news about your site today and decided that I had to be involved in the wake.

What did I like - the fact that it was created and maintained by fans with no "hidden agenda", who loved the genre as much as I do and enjoyed the stuff that others didn't (the cheesy stuff). I liked the fact that it attempted to create community, I liked that I got an entry in the Writers Block and people came to me from it and I loved the range of material covered.

Why am I glad it's dead - I'm not. I like the idea that the new site will load faster and I understand your frustration at keeping it all together (my site has something like 25 files and it sometimes seems overwhelming to me) but no, I'm not at all glad it's dead.

What I wish for it in the afterlife - for the old site, peace and tranquility and the knowledge that it did its job and did it well. For the new site, I wish it everything. It's that simple.

Keep up the good work, Feo, you're doing a grand job. Take care and have a great Christmas

Best wishes Mark West

To all the rest of you who write me every day, thank you. Thank you BIG time. I'll always do what I can, for as long as I can, to make this site rock!
