GOJIRA! GOJIRA!
Anyone who woke up and looked at imdb.com today noticed a teeny tiny link in the left hand column. So non-descript as to nearly be unnoticable except - to a monster movie fiend like me - the link said, GOJIRA: Fainaru Uôzu. This can only mean one thing, amigos! GODZILLA!!!

Early this year, the original GODZILLA from 1954 was released for the first time in the U.S., with clean film and sound. This was Godzilla without the Raymond Burr edits and so, a lot more story. And for a movie about an impossibly large varmint on a rampage through Japan (NOT just Tokyo) - it suspended belief quite nicely. In short, there was less cheese, more story!

The original GODZILLA - not yet released to DVD - is still touring the U.S. in select theaters (courtesy of Rialto Pictures) and if you are a fan, I'd advise you to see it, plan a road trip if you must - because nothing beats the massive movie screen and hearing Godzilla's roar echo through a cinema is a trip in itself. That music still chills me!

The new Godzilla movie, translated into English to mean GODZILLA: Final Wars, makes a coup for a kensforce.com, an "all Godzilla" site, which has an interview with the director, Ryuhei Kitamura. Read more about the Hollywood preview here.

If you are one of those kinds of Horror fans that just love stories about big ass monsters tearing ass all over earth, check out the following novels.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -
Few people can have a successful movie career of over 60 unwatchable movies in only 20 years. But today's birthday boy makes the cut
Happy Birthday to
Actor Jeff Fahey (PSYCHO III, THE SERPENT OF DEATH, IMPULSE, BODY PARTS, IRON MAZE, THE LAWNMOWER MAN, WOMAN OF DESIRE, TEMPTATION, FREEFALL, SERPENT'S LAIR, DARKMAN III: Die Darkman Die, LETHAL TENDER, DETOUR, REVELATION, THE SCULPTRESS, UNSPEAKABLE, DARK HUNTERS, CORPSES and far more) is 51.
In 2001, our next birthday boy did a Thriller movie and discovered he liked it. Since then the last three of his four movies have been Horror or Thriller or Horror Thriller movies. So happy birthday to
Actor David No (INVINCIBLE, REIGN IN DARKNESS, SUBTERANO, THE MATRIX RELOADED) who is 31.
This Birthday girl has played in different genres of movies, but none so steady as Horror!
Actor Anna Faris (LOVERS LANE, SCARY MOVIE, SCARY MOVIE 2, MAY, SCARY MOVIE 3) is 28.
And on Sunday -
Director Joe Dante (PIRANHA, THE HOWLING, GREMLINS, GREMLINS 2, "EERIE, INDIANA" [TV], HAUNTED LIGHTHOUSE) is 57.

HAPPY HORROR BIRTHDAYS TO -
It's a shame to think that for about 48% of you in the U.S., and a significant number of you world wide, the following birthday people are actually discomforting, and for a very vocal and bigoted fraction of that 48%, the following people are actually horrifying (although I'd like to think that none of those people are among my audience. The ones I speak of are probably those same mewling PC kitties who say, "How can you like Horror when there is so much Horror in the world?"* But just in case...). So Happy Horror birthdays to
Daughters of U.S. President Geroge and Laura Bush
Jenna Bush
and
Barbara Bush, who are both 23.
There, today's fright is over you pampered little chickens. Now go educate yourselves and get a life.
As for the rest of yall, enjoy the Holidays!
*My answer is usually along the lines of, "How can you like drama when yer such a drama queen?" This riposte works for both sexes.

KING KONG, GODZILLA, AND ... ?
It's a shame that the original KING KONG is nowhere to be found on DVD. Especially when one considers all the old crap that is crawling onto DVD coasters. If some piece of shit movie from ten or 20 years ago gets burned to a disk these days, they call it a classic! Hey! Crappy movies don't get better with age - they get much, much worse! With that off of my chest, here's a quickie: A political cartoon from Cox and Forkum featuring nervous New York City suits quaking in fear from an attack by ...

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAY TO -
Of his 5 movies to date, 3 of them were Horror, so let's give a big Happy Birthday to
Actor Oded Fehr (THE MUMMY, THE MUMMY RETURNS, RESIDENT EVIL:Apocalypse) who is 34.
Our next birthday boy has made a career in that category that is one step below direct to video: direct to cable. Good luck finding a video, but you may catch him at 2 or 3 in the morning sometime on Cinemax or something.
Actor Maxwell Caulfield (THE SUPERNATURALS, MIND GAMES, PROJECT ALIEN, SUNDOWN: The Vampire In Retreat, DANCE WITH DEATH, WAXWORK II, ANIMAL INSTINCTS, MAXIMUM FORCE 2, ALIEN INTRUDER, THE PERFECT TENANT, FACING THE ENEMY) is 45.
And this birthday boy is well known to fans of Italian Horror - and how! The Internet Movie Database has many of his horror credits listed as "SciFi" but, come on! Nearly all of them are alien monsters coming to earth and butchering everybody! Get real! Science Fiction? HA! Arthur C. Clarke that ain't! So Happy Birthday to

Actor Franco Nero (I CRIMINALI DELLA GALASSIA, I DIAFANOIDI VENGONO DA MARTE, IL TERZO OCCHIO, LA MORTE VIENE DAL PIANETA AYTIN, GIORNATA NERA PER L'ARIETE, HITCH-HIKE, THE VISITOR, THE SALAMANDER, KAIMIKAZE 1989, THE GIRL, ALIEN TERMINATOR, DIE HARD 2, LA VOCE DEL SANGUE, MEGIDDO: The Omega Code 2, and I've gotta stop here because ol' Franco has made over 150 freaking movies!) who is 63 and still going strong. If you are one of those Horror fans whose tastes cross over into Westerns or Crime Dramas, Franco's other flicks won't leave you wanting. With 150+ films under his belt, the man has made crap and classics.
Writer Joe Eszterhas (JAGGED EDGE, BETRAYED, BASIC INSTINCT, SLIVER, JADE) is 60.

OH, I'VE GOT YER BOOMSTICK!
Quick! What is Sam Raimi's latest film adventure? That's right! He produced the re-make of the successful JU-ON: The Grudge into the successful THE GRUDGE! Now then, what do Sam and Bruce Campbell have in common? That's right! Bruce does cameos in a lot of Sam Raimi movies including both SPIDER-MAN flicks. Am I going somewhere with this? You bet! Now that I've brought the newbies up to speed, all the long time Horror fans are shouting and groaning, "EVIL DEAD, you shit! Sam and Bruce were behind the EVIL DEAD movies, Feo!"
That's true, but what's more, Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are behind the re-make of EVIL DEAD! That's right, bu-ddy. And they're doing it with their original producer, Rob Tapert. This is your new home! Learn to like it!

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAY TO -
Some actors, like writers, never make it to the "A-List" but diligently work throughout their careers as a second or third tier actor; aka character; aka supporting actor. Today's birthday boy is such a person, laying a strong foundation into every role he plays. In the mid 1980's he largely traded his Western movie guns to play in Horror movies, and now he's been in enough to get birthday wishes here. Happy Birthday to
Actor Clu Gulager (MYSTERY IN DRACULA'S CASTLE [TV], RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, A NIGHTMARE ON ELMSTREET 2, THE OFFSPRING, THE HIDDEN, HUNTER'S BLOOD, UNINVITED, TEEN VAMP, THE WILLIES, THE KILLING DEVICE, THE PUPPET MASTER 5) who is 76.

WHAT'S WITH THESE GUYS?
First they used Lovecraft to tear apart CBS News (See Nov. 11 headline, Eldritch Media) and now this! They're Republicans! They're intellectuals! They're mostly scientists with a few politicians and lawyers thrown in, but mainly they seem to like using Horror story and Horror movie metaphors to describe the modern world.

It's a stretch to be sure, but writer S. T. Karnick attempts to draw parallels between American and British governance and culture, using SHAUN OF THE DEAD to make his point!

PICCIRILLI IS THE GOH TO GUY

The World Horror Convention (WHC) committee is pleased to announce that Tom Piccirilli has been confirmed as a Guest of Honor for the 15th Annual World Horror Convention being held in New York City. Piccirilli is one of the most talented, prolific and original authors of our day with work that regularly appears in the pages of the genre's top magazines and anthologies.

Publisher's Weekly says of Piccirilli, "In a genre where twisted souls and violence are the norm, Piccirilli's work stands out for how it blends these elements with a literate sensibility." The World Horror Convention committee is thrilled to add such a visionary talent to the growing roster of honored guests, including filmmaker Mick Garris; editors Tom and Elizabeth Monteleone; and authors Harlan Ellison, Tim Lebbon and Jack Ketchum.

Tom Piccirilli is the author of 13 novels including A CHOIR OF ILL CHILDREN, THE NIGHT CLASS, A LOWER DEEP, GRAVE MEN, and the forthcoming NOVEMBER MOURNS. He's been a finalist for the World Fantasy Award and is the winner of three Bram Stoker Awards. You can learn more about him and his work at: http://www.tompiccirilli.com/.

ELDRITCH MEDIA
If any of you still go to cbsnews.com for information, you may have come across this disjointed rant by Eric Engberg, "Blogging As Typing, Not Journalism" The thing about Eric's column, when you see the mixed metaphors, the spelling errors, contradicting analogies, and poorly constructed sentences, is to understand two things.
1. Eric can't write
2. Yet he wrote for CBS news until retirement.

"So what?" You might say. "God Damn, you Feo! What in the hell does this have to do with Horror, Thriller, Mystery, or Suspense?"

The answer comes in with a response from Douglas Kern at TechCentralStation who not only hoists Engberg upon his own self-important petard, but does so using Lovecraftian metaphors! If you've never imagined someone writing an insightful and witty riposte using old H. P. Lovecraft, check out Doug's "The Big Eye Blinks".

How cool would the presidential campaigns have been if at least one debate specified the use of Cthulhu Mythos in the candidates responses? TOO COOL!

Wow! All of those credits and a lot more and we've never reviewed a single Scheider flick! And we've reviewed over 350 movies! And they aren't brief reviews either! Hoo be doo! Time to go grab a few Scheider films and put my two cents online!

From Jon F. Merz
MERZ' MAELSTROM PROJECT

Thriller author Jon F. Merz (the Lawson Vampire series and Jake Thunder Adventures) has announced the launch of Maelstrom Books, a new specialty publisher of limited edition horror, mystery, and thriller novels utilizing innovative marketing and multimedia techniques to promote its authors and to help create buzz around Maelstrom's publishing endeavors.

"The 21st century is proving more than ever before that readers are looking for novels that embrace a multi-faceted approach to delivering great storytelling. Maelstrom will focus on providing fantastic fiction, excellence in customer appreciation, publishing, and delivering multiple streams of entertainment."

As its first project, Maelstrom Books will publish the fifth book in Merz's Lawson Vampire series, THE KENSEI. "I decided the best way to prove what we'll be doing is to launch with one of my novels first. That way readers can determine if they'd like to continue to be a part of the Maelstrom Books experience." The print-run will be limited to just 750 copies featuring a wraparound dust jacket by artist Michael J. Corcoran, a custom black slipcase, sewn-in satin ribbon marker, and an introduction written by the author.

But what makes this limited so special is the fact that subscribers will NOT receive a chapbook as a bonus - they will receive the very first official Fixer COMIC BOOK instead. Merz will write a special short story, which will then be rendered into a high-quality comic. "Doing the comic as a publisher costs a lot more, but it really adds a nice dimension to the project."

Pre-orders have been brisk. THE KENSEI debuted last week at the #1 spot on the Shocklines Advance Order Bestseller List and the Maelstrom Books website has been taking a lot of orders as well. Merz is also running an e-serial of THE KENSEI that will start on November 15th. Anyone interested in signing up for the FREE e-serial should send an email to:
TheKensei-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Merz is also planning a grand prize giveaway for anyone who purchases a copy of THE KENSEI, although he has yet to reveal details beyond saying, "It will be bigger than anything done before in the small press publishing field. I'm looking forward to announcing it in a month or so."

Maelstrom Books will publish THE KENSEI by July of 2005 and Merz already has the second project lined up. "It's an author who has been around for a long time, quietly making a name for himself. His work is great and he has a loyal group of fans who want more from him. We're hoping to have his book out by the end of 2005."

NOBODY WANTS TO PLAY WITH ME
Okay, so because of this story, my co-workers got to talking about the Diamondbacks; who likes the D'backs; what other teams they love/like.

Steven: "I like the Bengals!"
Rochela: "I love the Tigers!"
Me: "Aren't they the same thing? Bengal Tigers?"
Rochela: "Cha! NO! Jeezus, Feo! One is in Cincinatti and the other lives in Detroit! Who do you like?"
Me: "I like the Microbes!: The ones that live on the lips of lava vents!"

I got a flat note of stares farting through the fugue of temporary, neural misfirings: A speeding train of thought with all the mass and inertia of a safe and sure subject, derailing abruptly off the tracks and arcing into the depths of a conversational chasm; which is as music to the ears of one such as I!

It must be how Dennis Miller felt doing Monday Night Football. Infantile pun-clever humor on my part? Perhaps, but no matter how you psycho-babblyze it, it's strangely satisfying.

From Trey Barker
2000 MILES AND 9 MONTHS

"Five Star Press has acquired Trey R. Barker's first novel, "2000 Miles to Open Road." The 80,000 word crime novel will be available in August, 2005. Barker said the novel is an exploration of the relationship between two brothers, the 'good,' and the 'bad.' But as with so much of Barker's work, the lines between good and bad are blurry at best and usually non-existant.

The book opens in Carson City, NV with the culmination of a $20,000 scam that allows Hal Turnbull to buy the DVD of a particular murder. Hal's quest is to prove to his brother Hanford that he is not the murderer, that the murder charge hanging over Hal's head is just a mistake.

But it isn't quite that simple. Between getting the DVD in Nevada and giving it to his brother in Texas, Hal must endure shootouts, a man with a yen for headless bodies, a church full of priests who all seem to pack firearms, and the man who most definitely wants the DVD back.

2000 Miles is also a love story, exploring the lengths to which a man will go to insure a life with the woman he loves.

MEMORIAL DAY

From Harry Shannon
ATTACK OF THE HARRYS

Harry Shannon (BAD SEED, NIGHT OF THE BEAST) reports that he's been working hard to finish the first draft of a low-budget, isolated mountain cabin type indie horror picture for a fledgling company located in California. The first-time director will be talented Israeli photographer Yossi Sassoon, of darkhaze.net.
Shannon says "I'm delighted that my old pal Harry Manfredini (composer on FRIDAY THE 13th, THE HILLS HAVE EYES, HOUSE, etc.) has already agreed to do the music and write some songs with me."
The tentative title of the down-and-dirty project is THE DEPARTED. Shannon concludes: "So far, it's a lot of fun, although coming up with something fresh is a lot harder than it seems! I will relay more when I know more."

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -
And on Sunday
Any monster aficionado worth the salt of Lot's wife knows that magical TAH DAH! radiation makes tiny things grow big (THEM), normal sized things grow bigger (old SPIDERMAN, THE HULK), and in either case, turns everyone and everything into monsters (GODZILLA, THE HIDEOUS SUN DEMON, THE BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS). Or at least you would know that if you really believed in 1950s monster movies and early 1960s comic books (Okay, so regular radiation won't do that, but how about GAMMA RADIATION??? How about a radioactive spider?)
If she were still alive, one of the smartest Poles in history (she was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1847) would have told you that radiation doesn't turn you into a powerful monster, it just kills you! Our birthday girl learned that the hard way when she died from leukemia brought on by overexposure to radiation (actually, she was having skin problems and a slew of other ailments brought on by radiation - the blood cancer just got her first!).
Today's audiences are, of course, far smarter and sophisticated than their dumb grandparents! We know that you can't get monsters from an overdose of radiation - that's stupid! Giant monsters would magically TAH DAH! require TAH DAH! genetics (THE KINDRED, AKIRA, JURASSIC PARK, DEEP BLUE SEA, BATS, RESIDENT EVIL, SPIDERMAN: the movie) or nano-somethings (PREY) or genetic-nanos, (HULK: The Movie) So happy birthday to
Scientist Marie Sklodowska Curie (Discovered the element, radium) who would be 157 today. Granted, that's pretty damn old for anybody, but who knows what's possible: she WAS exposed to an awful lot of radiation, right? You don't buy that? Well would you buy genetic-nano-radiation? Yeah, I bet you would!

And on Saturday
Actor Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (X-MEN, ROLLERBALL, FEMME FATALE, X2, THE PUNISHER, GODSEND) is 32.
Actor Thandie Newton (INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, LOADED, BELOVED, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE II, THE TRUTH ABOUT CHARLIE, SHADE, THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, CRASH) is 32.

MYSTERIOUS EVENTS UNCHAINED
On Saturday, November 20, the American Independent Business Alliance wants people to shop only at locally owned retailers in their communities. The nationwide event, America Unchained, evolved out of Austin Unchained, the Austin Independent Business Alliance's event held, with great success, last November, said Jennifer Rockne, AMIBA director. Austin Unchained was a celebration of the way spending one’s dollars locally can have a positive impact on the local community, as local retailers give back as much as three times more than national chains. Join the experiment!

NOVEMBER 2

From Matt Warner
WARNER AT HORRORWORLD

Announcing a new monthly column about writing, "Author's Notes," on the Horror World website. The first installment, "I'll Have One Large Blood Shake and a Side-Order of Stereotypes, Please," went up October 31st. Look for future rants on a variety of subjects. It's nice to finally have an outlet for my big mouth. Contact me if there's something in particular you'd like me to flap my gums about.

I'm thrilled to announce that my short story THE CAVE sold to horror's flagship magazine, Cemetery Dance. No word yet on what issue it will appear in. "The Cave" concerns an estranged father and son's exploration of a condemned apartment building.

ELECTION YEAR HORROR
It's over! It's finally over! After more than a year of vicious attack ads and mudslinging, Ralph Nader has finally conceded his candidacy (Whew! Who saw THAT coming, eh?). Now we just have to wait out the battle between the incumbent and the challenger. It's incumbent on Bush to remain in office during the war, while Kerry needs to challenge that position.

White House Chief of Staff Andy Card, looking boring, presumptuous, and so very Kerry last night, announced that the Bush camp was celebrating victory. However, in regards to states, as few as two and as many as four eggs have yet to hatch as of the morning of Nov. 3.

Will Ohio be the Florida of 2004? Still counting...
