JANUARY 27 From Jon Condit at Horror Channel UltimateRomero.com is now live, or should we just say living? Fans have long clamored for an extensive website dedicated to the man himself, and now you're just a click away from pure horror bliss! Prepare to sink your claws into the hottest Romero related merchandise, post on interactive forums, browse through the many photo galleries, read through all new film synopses written specifically for the site, and of course get the skinny on all of the latest Romero news including upcoming films and appearances! "Every Romero fan needs to have the ultimate Romero experience," says Chris Roe, George's manager. "We want to give them the opportunity to find out all about George's career, both past and present. George loves his fans, and this site is specifically tailored to them." FeoNote: For Horror fans, George Romero is to zombies, as George Lucas is to space operas. There's a certain fiendish loyalty to George R. as the man who added zombies to the list of Horror icons like Vampires, Frankensteins, werewolves, and Mummys (a type of zombie but nothing like the living dead!). We all have our most favorite and least favorites in George's series, but many of us staunchly support everything Romero. Does that read like a suck up? Well sorry! I don't do it that often, but in case you didn't notice, this IS a freaking Horror site so I AM something of a FANBOY! And George is one of the reasons why! Deal with it! Now then - ahem! - I spoke to George's manager, Chris Roe, today about George's original website, georgeromero.com. I noticed, in looking at the new site, that the old one hadn't been linked up. I asked if it was still legit, what was happening with it, and so on. Chris told me that, for right now, a lot of ideas are being considered about what to do with it. He suggested a number of possibilities, but he couldn't officially comment on any of them as nothing had been decided yet. Yes, the old domain is still part of the Romero family, but Ultimate Romero.com is THE flagship website (so to speak) for George.
JANUARY 26 From Brian Knight But seriously, anything Mr. Keene writes is worth buying – phenomenal writer – so have a look at his new NEP release, Take the Long Way Home, and nab your copy before they are gone forever. KING OF SOULS When four fathers venture onto the reclusive Johnny "Junk" Curtis's property in search of their missing children, what they find is beyond their worst nightmares; the motive for the hermit's strange junk fetish, the fates of their missing children, and Johnny Junk's greatest secret. A secret he guards at all costs. Can they survive the trap that Johnny Junk has set for them? Will they escape the King Of Souls? "A chilling story of how far a father will go to find his missing child. Dark and foreboding and extremely well done." This title is expected to ship in March 2006. HACKS Someone in those woods is not happy to see them. The body count rises, and the survivors band together to fight the relentless killer. Will they escape the nightmare on The Devil's Tail Ridge, or die trying? This title is expected to ship in May 2006. FeoNote: The World Horror Convention is coming up soon and both Brian Knight as well as Brian Keene (both former reviewers for feoamante.com - how cool is that?) may very well be there. But how to tell the two BKs apart? Luckily for you, I - Feo Amante - offer you this From the POV (point of view) of a Sears Husky sized felon, Brian Keene (aka BK the elder) is too damn ugly to bother with. There are far too many young gangbangers coming in who need protection and can be persuaded to "cook and clean" for the privilege (aka Toss one mean Salad). Nope; Brian Keene wouldn't be on anyone's radar. As such, he'd be getting no one's protection. BK the elder would do well to stay in the prison library and brush up on the law, using his new found knowledge to ensure his safety. Caveat: All of this dubious knowledge on my part comes from reading books and watching movies, you understand. I've never been to prison, and I've never actually spent time in jail - at least, in any meaningful way.
JANUARY 25 From David Nordhaus My first novel, A Darkness Inbred, is back in print again, for the third time. This time with Midnight Library. Check it out at midnightlibrary.com/catalogue2.html. It was soft-launched earlier this month sans the fanfare (well, it IS the third edition), but it is now available in trade paperback via worldwide distribution through the standard venues. Gilbert, my publisher, who is also publishing my second novel Book of Legion later this year, decided he wanted my first one as well, and I was more than happy to oblidge. I 'do' have a small, weird request though - that if you go out to someplace like Amazon.com to buy my book, please buy the Midnight Library edition and not the House of Dominion/Prime Books edition. I'm not going to eat up your emailbox with the whole story, so if you're interested read my latest rant at paddedroom.net/rants.html. My second novel, Book of Legion, after long last, is coming out in trade paperback format by The Midnight Library by late summer this year. Also due out later this year in trade paperback is the collaborative horror collection effort Downward Spiral by JF Gonzalez, Wayne Allen Sallee, Gord Rollo, and myself. Beyond that, my third novel Ex-Generation looks like it is now slated for an early 2007 release.
What if owning a cat could cause you to lose your mind? What if humans were susceptible to a feline parasite and, in extreme cases, that parasite could take over your brain? Assume that, should you be one of the few extreme cases, the parasite would make you want to start gathering more and more cats into your house. After all, the cats are the parasite's favorite food. The parasite also would want you to live in the cat's filth, since that is the right environment for transition. Of course, having a parasite's mind connected to your own would make you insane. You'd become paranoid, afraid of other humans, wanting only more cats in your life. The parasite, connected to your human brain and in some odd way, thinking with it, might even try to communicate with you. At that point, you'd start hearing voices. The voices would tell you to avoid humans, increase the filth in your environment and the number of cats. The fact that you were hearing voices like this, would mean you were experiencing schizophrenia. Now, that's just imagination talking, right? Not according to the latest research. Scientists Identify Motor That Powers Parasitic Cell Invasion Scientists Find Stronger Evidence For Link Between Cat Faeces And Schizophrenia From Tempe Video It’s that time of year again for the kids of Bonejack Heights... to prepare the haunted house for Halloween! And this year, one of them has a big surprise in store when he dedicates the spookshow to a legendary god named The Destroyer. But little do the teen misfits know that this well-intentioned heavy metal warrior has mistakenly awakened The Destroyer for real! And now he’s ready to teach them what carnage is all about... As usual, Seaver and his band of wayward misfits have filled up the DVD release with two commentary tracks, a 29-minute behind-the-scenes featurette, cast rehearsals and more! HAPPY

JANUARY 24 YEAH, YEAH, BUT YOU KNOW YOU'LL LISTEN From Market Wire The band had an extremely busy year as they once again graced the small screen with performances on "Good Morning America," "Live With Regis & Kelly" and "Good Morning America Weekend." In December of 2005, a video for "Wizards in Winter" created by a fan made its way on to the internet and became one of the most downloaded files. The video, an over-the-top light display choreographed to the group's latest single attracted local news all over the country as well as the "Today Show" and "Inside Edition." The "Wizards" email became such a phenomenon that it was opted to become a national TV commercial. The band's winter tour hit over 80 markets selling over 725,000 tickets for a concert tour that lasted only eight weeks. An astonishing number of 1.35 million people have seen the Trans-Siberian Orchestra perform live in just the past 2 years alone. According to Billboard, only one other band (The Eagles) drew more ticket-buyers over the 2004 six-month span covering the winter and spring - and TSO was on the road for only seven weeks during that time. These achievements further reaffirm Trans-Siberian Orchestra's place as an American institution. So just where did this band come from? Why 80's hardcore Heavy Metal, of course! Check out TSO's composer page.
JANUARY 23 QUICK BITES Also On a happier note for Horror, while HOSTEL is down to #9 on the charts, it has made over 4 times its cost, which will keep Lions Gate in the mood for distributing more Horror movies. Wassmor This week's big opener is UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION. While the original opened big, it quickly dropped off of the charts in the ensuing weeks. The sequel is better and deserves to stay around. As much as I disliked the first one, it was Director / Writer Len Wiseman's first time out as director, and I wanted the newbie to make good. Now he has.
WELL, THAT JUST ABOUT WRAPS IT UP FOR GOD! Newly Discovered Worm Fences With Penis After reading that, I've got to say that NO Supreme being, after coming up with a whacked out idea like THAT for reproduction, gives a jolly god damn for the many vagaries of human sexuality between consenting adults. I mean, come one! I know that humans are several hundred damn steps up the chain from flatworms. But the thought of a creator getting an idea to go create that kind of reproduction in any of his creatures makes for one seriously twisted Supremo Beano! Don't start talking about "Divine Mystery" here. Ain't nothing divine about penis fights! Trust me! Its brutal! Nope, having a "God" get all worked up about who is having sex with whom, after he/she/it goes and creates something like a flatworm doesn't fit in the grand scheme. Unless of course, its all evolution, in which case its "whatever works!" And yet, if one believes not only in evolution, but the idea that some memories can be passed on genetically - like inherited traits - then a possible Imogine lateotentare ancestor in humanity's long distant past might explain why straight men are so bugged around gay men and the idea of male homosexuals. So many times in our flatworm past, too many guys lost the penis fight and wound up getting stuck with laying the eggs. Bummer! Which may also be where we get the term, "I'm not laying your eggs, dude!" HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -

JANUARY 19 FAMOUS FEOS
From Harry Shannon Former feoamante.com reviewer, Harry Shannon, is the guest editor, and asked folks to focus on the wafer-thin boundary between horror and dark crime fiction. The issue will also feature original pieces from Ken Bruen, Dave Zeltzerman, Robert Walker, Joe Konrath, Gina Gallo and yours truly; also commentary on the subject from Hardcase Crime's Charles Ardai, quotes from Tom Piccirilli, Ed Gorman, Mort Castle, David Morrell and others. FeoNote: As for me, I'm refusing to focus on the boundary between Horror and dark crime fiction. Screw that boundary! On the other hand, I'm also looking forward to reading that issue as that writer roster is looking pretty damn swee-eet!
GIANT MONSTERS INVADE JAPAN! Sigh! It was inevitable, it seems. Actual giant monsters from the deep are wrecking havoc in Japan, but is anybody really surprised? With movies like GODZILLA and his various nemesis's's's like Hedorah the Smog Monster, the Japanese have been warning us for years that something like this would happen: flying saucers in Tokyo skies can't be far behind. The monsters, in this case, are giant jellyfish, and I'm not talking giant as in, big as a pig - big. I'm not even talking big as a human - big. Try big as a refrigerator big! Try big as Refrigerator Perry big! That guy was inhumanly big! But he never attacked Japan (to the best of my knowledge). But these freaking jellyfish have! They get up to 6.7 feet and weigh as much as 440 pounds! The funny part? With the surprise of the moment, and with no evidence whatsoever, some are blaming the current boogyman - Global Warming! Of course, it could also have been summer warming and some natural freakish weather over the summer. This problem has ben going on since September at least, and was reported since the first of December by some. Reuters is right on top of the story, reporting it today! Check out the world wide news here. I start with Rueters first because their reporting is usually more tabloid goofy than others. JANUARY 17 From Joe Nassise In HERETIC, the Holy Order of the Knights Templar has been resurrected as a secret combat arm of the Vatican and is charged with defending mankind from the supernatural. Knight Commander Cade Williams is in control of the prestigious Echo Team, a special forces-type unit that is called in to investigate when an unknown enemy begins assaulting Templar strongholds. Bestselling author Clive Barker called HERETIC "a first-rate, stylish work," while the Trades Entertainment Magazine summed it up as "Hellraiser meets Delta Force by way of George Romero." With the Templars back in the public view thanks to books like Dan Brown's DA VINCI CODE and Hollywoodfilms like NATIONAL TREASURE, readers are eager to experience more from this historical sect that is rooted in secrecy and myth. Podcasting, the ability to offer syndicated audio content direct to listeners for use on their iPods or other portable media device, has grown exponentially in the last year. For Pocket Books, podcasting seemed the perfect way to introduce a wider audience to this exciting new series. "As a cross-genre thriller, HERETIC will appeal to a wide variety of readers," says Amy Pierpont, Senior Editor at Pocket Books. "Podcasting will allow us to break down genre barriers and introduce Joe's work to a broader audience than just the typical horror fan." Cameron Reilly, founder of The Podcast Network and a co-sponsor of the event, is also enthusiastic about such marriages between podcasting and publishing. "While providing books in an audio format is not a new idea, podcasting provides readers with a new avenue to discover quality books to read," says Cameron. "By making chapters of their books available in an audio version for free downloading, authors and publishers now have an opportunity to introduce their works to a global audience. In the future, The Podcast Network will be working with authors to find suitable sponsors for the podcast versions of their work, so they still realize a commercial return on their efforts even if listeners don't eventually purchase the book." "Podcasting of audio books is a natural next step for the publishing world," said Nick Psaltos, President, General Manager, and Founder of The Horror Channel. "Joe and Pocket Books are doing a tremendous thing, not only for fellow horror writers, but for authors everywhere. The Horror Channel's website will be updated with behind-the-scenes writing information and information about the characters as new chapters are podcast. It will also offer a venue for fan feedback and webchat with the author." "The Horror Channel has come to be synonymous with all things horror for me," said Nassise, former President of the Horror Writers Association. "Their goal of putting a diverse range of horror products into the hands of horror fans everywhere made them the perfect partner for this project and I couldn't be more pleased to be working with them." Interested listeners can sign up for The Templar Chronicles podcast and can learn more about the series itself by visiting the official website, thetemplarchronicles.com. Listeners can also visit The Horror Channel website, horrorchannel.com, for additional information about the podcast, for updates, and for feedback and webchat with the author. JANUARY 16 MOVIE DOO Well, Peter Jackson did and even though KING KONG has been in the theaters for 4+ weeks, his film is only now at the halfway mark. That means that KING KONG has to make as much at the theaters as it already has in the last month, just to break even. HOSTEL, on the other hand, was profitable in its first week, all else is gravy. That gravy being DVD rentals and sales and other ancillary profits like cable and such. I suspect that the bottom line here is this: no one has ever made a hit remake of KING KONG because no one followed the rule of KING KONG's creators, which is, A GIANT APE IS SCARY! He's not lovable. He's not misunderstood. He's not a sympathetic creature cursed by his plight (that would be a werewolf. Were wolf. Wolfman is also acceptable). He is a cruel, vicious monster! Fay Wray's Ann Darrow character was terrified of Kong and never loved or even liked him. She was scared of him because he was a giant deadly monster. Darrow was nothing more than a toy; a play-pretty to Kong. He seemed to enjoy her terror. Ruth Rose (co-writer, KING KONG) didn't get that back when RKO studios freed the reigns to let her write SON OF KONG (which barely eked out a profit - and only then because audiences got hoodwinked by a sequel to a popular movie) and MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (which was made 15 years later during a resurge in KING KONG mania), and Dino De Laurentiis as well as Jackson didn't get that when they both made their remakes - based more on writer Rose's version of KONG - than the idea by Edgar Wallace and Merian C. Cooper. It's happened with GODZILLA too. The moment they make him nice or sympathetic (GODZILLA'S REVENGE anyone? The big G has a stupid looking son that "toots" smoke rings!), that movie tanks. The best GODZILLA movies are the ones where he is an awesome, terrible force of nature: as deadly and indifferent as a hurricane. Yeah! From Paul Kane And for those wanting to know more about what they're letting themselves in for there are reviews of FunnyBones and Master of the White Worms (one of the novellas featured in the book) at DarkKrypt.com and TheSwordReview.com. The competition closes on February 15th. Good luck!
GETCHER WRITE ON But first, a few caveats and history. BioTech: I'm science geek, likely even more than you (No offense, its just a thing geeks do), but even so, I knew that something like genetically modified foods (GM) had to be handled with care. For years, the talk coming down the pipeline from the folks who thought they stood to gain from biotech was laughably inane from the get go. Monsanto wanted to foist a corn on populations that was not any better for you than regular corn, but it was more resistant to Monsanto made poisons like RoundUp! As usual when shifty people have no credible evidence to back up their claims, Monsanto and their apologists used emotion instead of facts. Among them: the Oh, Think of the Children ploy! Or in this case, think of the poverty stricken nations who need insect resistant crops to feed their starving people. Well that's a real swell sentiment, but since RoundUp Corn and Wheat sell for one hell of a lot more than regular corn and wheat; and since you have to pay Monsanto for every crop you grow (even if your crop came from 2nd generation seed from the first seed you already bought from Monsanto), and considering that RoundUp insecticide is too expensive for most poverty stricken farmers in third world countries anyway, what the hell was the point of RoundUp for a starving world? The GM corn wasn't resistant to insects - not by a long shot - it was just resistant to Monsanto poisons! What's more, let's assume that you never bought or wanted Monsanto RoundUp Corn, but that your farm got pollinated by your neighbor's farm and he had Monsanto seed? Well now your crop belongs to Monsanto too! Then there were those who disguised themselves as scientists who actually made the claim that BioTech merely used factories to do what nature would do via evolution anyway. In what possible scenario of evolution would a pig's DNA ever mix with a peach? Believe me when I say that I'm all for BioTech when approached in a responsible manner. Here's what I had to say about it a few years back at ScienceAgogo.com But the responsibility to real science, research, and observation, is something that profit line companies want no part of. They want to sell you their BioTech, glean as much money through commerce or litigation as possible, and then, should something go wrong, wash their hands of the whole thing. That's not science, and that's not philanthropy: That's unbridled parasitic greed. And here is a case in point. Reports Slam USDA Biotech Experiments UNDERGROUND COMES AROUND January 14, 2006 - Chimericana Books Releases Chimeraworld #3 (atheist, misogynist, terrorist), edited by Oxford, UK-based artist/writer Mike Philbin (the man behind bizarro keyboard entity Hertzan Chimera R.I.P.). Mike began editing (and publishing) the Chimeraworld anthologies two years ago because he couldn't find any fiction that could hold his attention longer than *clicks fingers* that. Most of the things he read were derivative, weak, grey, cliched, genre-compliant filler product that any honest editor would have sent back in a black fugue of disdain or simply poured gasoline on and burned in the reject bin. From Weston Ochse What is Muy Mal? Muy Mal is a shared world created by Michael Oliveri, John Urbancik, and Weston Ochse. It's a world very much like our own, similar in time and place, but just about thirty degrees off of reality. This is a world in which magic never ceased to exist, where evil waits around every corner and where creatures walk side-by-side with everyday folk. Muy Mal is a world that is a very bad place. Each writer will explore their own corner of this world, though readers can expect some crossover between tales. Characters may make cameo appearances for example, and major events will affect every story. This is not collaboration so much as it is cooperation, and readers will be welcome to witness as much or as little of the world as they see fit. Each story will be serialized, and each writer may spread their work across several serialized pieces at a time. An overall title serves as an umbrella for each writer's work, and each individual tale will carry its own title as it unfolds chapter by chapter. These titles are: Chronicles of the Black Bishop by Weston Ochse Muy Mal is also an experiment in the delivery of online fiction. Thanks to the power and flexibility of WordPress, the stories will be accessible in a familiar, blog-like structure where each new chapter will appear at the top of each writer's section. Similarly, links will be available so readers may drill down and focus on specific serials. There will also be RSS feeds for each author so readers can pull content directly to their feed reader rather than visit the main site. Unbelievably, Muy Mal's contents are Free. All of the work posted to the site is licensed under a Creative Commons license, specifically the "Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.5 License." In English, this means readers are welcome to download and/or print the stories out to their heart's content. Give copies to friends and neighbors! We don't care, so long as the work is presented with bylines of the respective writer, it's not altered, and not used commercially. In even simpler terms: read it, enjoy it, and please don't screw us. If you have any further comments or questions, feel free to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.
