JUNE JUNE 30 From Kelly Parks The Quake series of games are among the best first person shooters of all time. Now it is true that Quake 3 was probably the least popular of the series, but hey, it’s free. Stop yer whinin’. Specifically, it’s free at TurboRush.com. JAMES CAMERON IN 3D James Cameron started out as a writer in Hollywood but realized that if you wanted to be in the control category over your story, then it was not enough to write it, you also had to know how to tell it, and that's where being a Director comes in. James Cameron told his first story (Directed), TERMINATOR, in 1984, with extra writing by Gale Anne Hurd, William Wisher Jr., and inspired by Harlan Ellison's SOLDIER and DEMON WITH A GLASS HAND. He's been rising ever since. Read The Times Online, 3D Tipped for Star Role, if it Takes off.

JUNE 29 From Maynard & Sims At some time over the past few years the chances are you have had contact with Len and Mick. You may have read their short stories. If not, take a chance right now by reading their online short story, BEWARE THE BECKONING STRANGER. Now is your chance to read SHELTER, a novel in their classic style. The house is a shambles, abandoned by its previous owner and left to rot. For decades it has stood, ignored and forgotten. But not empty. Beneath the house something waits. Leisure is announcing it like this: Book signing in UK, July 15th at Ottakars Bishops Stortford. Others to be announced, including USA. From Simon Clark And so begins Chapter 1 of London Under Midnight. Severn House release the hardcover in Britain this month, then September sees its release in the United States, Canada and the rest of the world. My guess is that the publication dates are fixed by the arrival of the cargo ships with the books on board -- the rule of thumb must be when the boat arrives in port then the books will be available soon after! Basically, London Under Midnight is a vampire novel in the tradition of Vampyrrhic and Vampyrrhic Rites. To be more specific, the seed was planted when I wrote the short story Vampyrrhic Outcast (new edition of Mammoth Book of Vampires edited by Stephen Jones). There, a woman is hurled into a river by a shadowy creature. When she realises she cannot drown she begins to understand a profound change to her body has taken place. This is one of the story strands that London Under Midnight follows into some uncanny and dangerous realms. Meanwhile, Ben Ashton, an investigative writer, is given the assignment of tracking down whoever is responsible for the VAMPIRE SHARKZ graffiti that mysteriously appears in the strangest of places... London Under Midnight is my first urban novel. I've added an article about the whys and wherefores to the Nailed By The Heart website. It's entitled Occult Territories and if anyone is a fan of Arthur Machen's work they'll know where I'm going with this. The title? Around eighty years ago Lon Chaney starred in London AFTER Midnight; it too featured vampires but the film was lost decades ago. Incidentally, Tod Browning planned to have Chaney take the central role in Dracula but this brilliantly versatile actor died before filming began and old Vlad was played by Lugosi. So the title, London Under Midnight, is a respectful nod toward the Lon Chaney classic that is no more. SECRET REALMS, HAUNTED PLACES In an ideal world we could all get on a bus and I'd show you some of the places that have inspired me. Here's the next best thing, a short film entitled Secret Realms, Haunted Places. It visits Whitby, England, that features not only in Vampyrrhic and Vampyrrhic Rites but in a certain book by Mr. Bram Stoker. Hopefully Stoker fans will be in for a pleasant surprise. The film also has an interactive element and follows in the footsteps of some of London Under Midnight's characters where, in the novel, they encounter the vampiric creatures that have emerged from the River Thames. Help yourself to popcorn: Here's the link to the film: bbr-online.com/nailed/index.php?page=RealmsPlaces.shtml ARVID AT COMIC GEEKSPEAK I have no recollection of what I said. I have a very deep fear I might have come off like Dennis Hopper's character in Apocalypse Now, but too late for regrets. Brother Matthew to be reprinted in the Dark Horse edition of Book 1! release date: Nov. 8 This is the other Big News Item this month. Brother Matthew: Blessed are the Meek is a stand-alone murder mystery set in the world of Rex Mundi. It originally ran on the Rex Mundi website in 2000. It started as a way to promote Rex Mundi before it hit the stands, but it became something more to me. I have another Brother Matthew story I'd like to do, and Scott Allie at Dark Horse, God bless 'im, has been receptive. No promises, but for now you can look forward to the reprint in Book 1. How's that for a bonus? HAPPY

JUNE 26 STARBUCKS HORROR #118
Harry Shannon is also an occasional reviewer and interviewer here at feoamante.com, and has had a few of his works reviewed here as well. His biggest upcoming project is the movie, DEAD AND GONE, which will star Katherine Bates (VAMPIRE AT MIDNIGHT), Chris Bruno (THE DEAD ZONE [TV]), Kyle Gass (BRAIN DEAD, JACOB'S LADDER, IDLE HANDS, EVOLUTION, and the band: TENACIOUS D), Ben Moody (EVANESENCE), as well as Harry himself. Harry wrote the screenplay and DEAD AND GONE is directed by Yossi Sasson. There are tons of Starbucks out there, gang, and they probably serve millions of cups of coffee everyday, so you have millions of chances to find Venti sized Cup #118, take a photo of yourself with it (a focused well-shot image of your face next to the cup is best). Send in your photo of you with the cup and I'll post it here! Visit Harry Shannon.
STEPHEN JONES AIN'T LIKIN' IT I begged to differ. "The hell you say," I told Brian. "Jones has a great sense of humor!" Brian was so damned serious about it, that I did some re-thinking myself. I only wanted to amuse, not offend. So (because you can't start off a prank and then stop it all half-assed, that's insulting - you must commit to your shit!) I apologized to Stephen who was probably left wondering what the hell I was talking about. On Thursday, Del Howison, of Dark Delicacies Bookstore in Burbank California, passed the following Open Letter on to me. I called Del and asked if he was sending it to me or to the website to post. Del was adamant that I not post the Open Letter - just yet. Normally, my method of doing things is to go ahead and do them and apologize afterward - but Del is a bud and, besides, he didn't write the Open Letter. So I promised to wait until he or Stephen gave me the go ahead. On Saturday, Horror writer, James A. Moore posted the open letter at Shocklines. So what the hell! Not all of you may shop at Shocklines.com, so I'm going to go ahead and post it for all to see. Stephen Jones is very upset and feels justified about it. Understand that I post the Open Letter because Jones is a reputable and respected contributor to Horror. This is not an open invitation to send silly-ass flame posts to me in the hopes that I'll post them too. There is nothing of the ad hominem attack in Jones Open Letter, and there is noticable merit to it. While that doesn't make him either right or wrong, it does give his Open Letter newsworthy value. AN OPEN LETTER REGARDING THE 2006 IHG AWARD For a year that produced such new and notable anthologies as ADVENTURE #1; ALL HELL BREAKING LOOSE; ASSEMBLY OF ROGUES; BERNIE HERRMANN’S MANIC SEXTET; THE BIG BOOK OF EROTIC GHOST STORIES; BLACKEST DEATH II; BLOOD SURRENDER; DARK DELICACIES; DARKNESS RISING 2005; DARK NOTES FROM NJ; DON’T TURN OUT THE LIGHT; HORROR BETWEEN THE SHEETS; GHOSTS AT THE COAST; HORRORS BEYOND; IN THE SHADOW OF EVIL; LATE VICTORIAN GOTHIC TALES; LOST ON THE DARKSIDE; THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF BEST NEW HORROR #16; NEMO BOOK 5; NOISY OUTLAWS, UNFRIENDLY BLOBS, AND SOME OTHER THINGS THAT AREN’T AS SCARY, MAYBE . . .; PHNTOMS AT THE PHIL; POE’S PROGENY; POLYPHONY #5; TAVERNS OF THE DEAD; TALES OUT OF DUNWICH; TEMPTING DISASTER; OUTSIDERS; REVENANT; TEL: STORIES; THE YEAR’S BEST FANTASY AND HORROR #18; SUPERNATURAL TALES #9; WEIRD SHADOWS OVER INNSMOUTH and many others, we, the undersigned, find it both inexplicable and insulting to those editors and writers working in the field that the judges of the so-called International Horror Guild Award were this year apparently unable to come to a decision in regard to the nomination of a single original anthology first published in the year 2005. This does not seem to have been a problem for any other major awards in the genre, and it can only be concluded that this year’s judges were neither capable nor knowledgeable enough to recognize the individual merits of these and other titles. As a result, they have brought into question the entire value of the IHG Award and its standing in our community. HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -
JUNE 23 RETURN OF THE WICKERMAN On August 22nd, Anchor Bay Entertainment, an IDT Entertainment company, will be re-releasing The Wicker Man DVD, repackaged. Presenting the acclaimed U.S. theatrical version of the 1978 cult horror classic, fully restored from original vault materials, The Wicker Man is the literate-yet-terrifying inspiration for the September 1st theatrical remake starring Nicolas Cage. When a young girl mysteriously disappears, Police Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward of “The Equalizer”) travels to a remote Scottish island to investigate. But this pastoral community, led by the strange Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee, HORROR HOTEL, SLEEPY HOLLOW, THE LORD OF THE RINGS), is not what it seems as the devout Christian detective soon uncovers a secret society of unbridled lust and pagan blasphemy. Can Howie stop the cult’s ultimate sacrifice before he comes face-to-face with the horror of THE WICKER MAN? Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento and Ingrid Pitt co-star in this provocative shocker written by Anthony Shaffer (Sleuth, Frenzy) that many fans and critics worldwide consider a modern horror masterpiece.

TODAY IS REFUGEE DAY CNN reporter, Christiane Amanpour is one of these people, and has wrote an article on the current Horrors of the world as she has personally witnessed them. The Shocking Truth About Covering Refugees. Would you like to help? From filmindependent.org THE DESCENT Things go from bad to worse to terrifying for six women spelunkers trapped deep in a cave in the Appalachian Mountains. First they get trapped by a cave-in, then they get lost, and then they realize the worst part . . . they’re not the only ones down there. An intense, claustrophobic film that packs a visceral punch, The Descent has been hailed as one of the best horror films of the past ten years. If you’re not scared of the dark yet, you will be. Fri. June 23, 8:30pm, Ford Amphitheatre (2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, Hollywood, CA) HEAD TRAUMA Seriously creepy and deeply unnerving, Head Trauma explores the uneasy difference between being psychotic and paranoid and actually having someone — or something — out to get you. When drifter George Walker returns to his deceased grandmother’s abandoned house, he must not only face down unwelcoming neighbors, but something far worse, something in the basement, something all the more terrifying because it knows George’s deepest secret. Transposing much of the spooky imagery from the recent Japanese horror explosion onto American small-town life, this is an unsettling slice of indie horror. Sat. June 24, 11:59pm, The Majestic Crest Theatre LAST RITES In the hideout of a reclusive arms dealer on the outskirts of town, two gangs — the Lords of Crenshaw from South Central and East Los Angeles’ El Diablo Muerto — are locked in a Mexican standoff. Outside, the cops are getting ready to roll in. It’s just another day in the hood until a pack of rabid zombies shows up. Then the real action begins. F/X artist and director Duane Stinnett masterfully orchestrates the terror and bloodletting in this gore fest that shows what could happen if we can’t all just get along. Fri. June 30, 11:59pm, The Majestic Crest Theatre SNOOP DOGG'S "HOOD OF HORROR" “It’s not all good in the hood,” warns Snoop Dogg as he gets ready to roll up against the forces of evil in this L.A. set film. Featuring three blood-soaked tales involving the residents of an inner city neighborhood whose actions in this life will determine their destination in the afterlife, Snoop Dogg’s “Hood of Horror” boasts eye-popping anime-style sequences, plenty of goo and gore, and even a few bootie breaks. Hood is part comedy, part frightfest, with a whole lot of “Hell yeah” mixed in. Tue. June 27, 9:30pm, Landmark Regent Theatre VOICE Equan Choi's atmospheric thriller layers tension with philosophy. In the hallways of their all-girls school, Sun-min still hears Young-eon's ghost begging for attention, forcing them to confront the limits of loyalty and remembrance. 104 min. Sat. July 1, 11:59pm, The Majestic Crest Theatre SOMETIMES IT'S NOT HORROR, JUST WEIRD Tempe Video is releasing a movie called GENUINE NERD. What makes this video different from your standard movie is that it's a documentary all about a man who just might be the world's most famous nerd: Toby Radloff. Now you might say that Bill Gates is the world's most famous nerd, but no: Nerds don't have people like U2's Bono doing a sleepover in their mansion. Bill Gates is a computer geek. Toby is a quantifiable nerd. Toby gained his fame via his long time friend and comic book writer, Harvey Pekar (AMERICAN SPLENDOR), whose comics about his life in the 1970s through the 1990s were collected into the Terry Zwigoff (CRUMB, GHOST WORLD, BAD SANTA) film American Splendor. Toby Radloff never got rich off his brief foray's into America's pop culture, but he did star in a few ultra low budget horror movies where all he had to do was play himiself, except as a killer: KILLER NERD, BRIDE OF KILLER NERD, and TOWNIES. Considering that he has only made or appeared in four movies in his entire life, that qualifies him for Horror actor status. That the nerdish triumverat of 1960s underground cartoonist, Robert Crumb; public schlub, Harvey Pekar, and buried beneath the underground, Toby Radlof could somehow make their insipid lives interesting is a tale that is not only enduring, but endearing. Watching Crumb and American Splendor, through the directoral eyes of Terry Zwigoff revealed two personas that connected to many of us as the external representation of our inner ids we keep repressed and within. The press release from Tempe Video sez: Featuring appearances by AMERICAN SPLENDOR creator Harvey Pekar, Judah Friedlander (the actor/comedian who played Toby in the SPLENDOR movie) and comic-book artist P. Craig Russell! The DVD of GENUINE NERD also features deleted scenes, web clips, trailer and 10 hours of audio podcasts as a DVD-ROM bonus! Street Date: July 25, 2006 HAPPY
