ALTERED STATES!!!THE SCIENCE MOMENT!!!EUREKA!
What? A drug that alters your state of consciousness in such a way that your thoughts become reality? Why, that's not entirely preposterous! There is an interpretation of some of the more bizarre results of various experiments in quantum physics that say that the act of a sentient being observing a quantum event can affect the outcome of that event. I personally don't agree with that interpretation but who knows? There was an experiment profiled on Nova (PBS) that showed that a bunch of people staring at a Geiger counter could affect when it went off (the decay of a radioactive atom being a quantum event). The science in this movie isn't entirely outside the realm.
The interpretation you refer to is known as the Observer Effect, part of Werner Heisenberg's1 Uncertainy Principle. Want to know more about the Observer Effect and the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle? Damn Right You Do! First, "What is... The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle When you remember that the "Ph" in Ph.D stands for Philosophy, you'll understand why "Metaphysical" is what some Scientists say when they don't want to lose tenure or grants by uttering the word, "Supernatural" (even though the words are synonyms for each other). Observing a Phenomenon Affects Its Outcome So then, What Is The Observer Effect In Quantum Mechanics? In exhaustive summation (for a Horror Thriller entertainment website, at any rate), this seven page paper (PDF) by Dr. Kenneth Paul Baclawski, 1 No, not the TV Show Breaking Bad, Heisenberg - well, not really.
