MICHAEL T. HUYCK Jr. In 1997 I started a website at a online entity called GeoCities. I called it Feo Amante's Horror "Everybody got one I want mine." I began it because Internet was the next big thing. I was a graphic artist and I wanted to add "Webmaster" to my resume. I also wanted a way to promote myself as a writer. By nearly blind luck, the first short story I'd ever submitted, RATTLESNAKE TIE, was accepted by Biker Magazine (now owned by Easy Rider) in 1995. I got the check (10 cents a word which, sadly, is considered "Pro rate" even in 2022), I paid my utilities and part of my rent with it (which, according to Stephen King means he considers me Talented. According to the late Harlan Ellison, means I'm a pro), and I felt I was taking off. I was visiting Horror websites like DrCasey.com, Horrornet.com, and MastersOfTerror (which had an altogether different feel in Pre-9/11) websites, to name a few. They all brought something to the Horror table and, as a huge, lonely fan of Horror, I felt I should do something too. Feo Amante's Horror Home Page became that thing. I created it and began reviewing books. It was Public Relations for a nobody like me who wanted to make a name for himself and sell more books. Or maybe I wanted to be a Professional Stand-up Comic? I was doing that at the same time. To promote myself I haunted various message boards of other Horror fans and wannabe Horror writers. At one of those I met Mikey Huyck and talked about my free space website being a PR voice for all folks trying to get into the publishing business. People like Huyck knew their stuff. They were founts of knowlege where Horror was concerned, and to a point, that knowlege was not only being given out for free (same as people do today on everything from Instagram to Twitter and more), chatboards have no staying power. Post today, gone by tomorrow, buried under a ton of posts by other people. What does it get you? Many people on the boards cheered me, but nobody understood what I was going for (or perhaps they didn't believe how committed I'd be to it). It took time for me to post enough reviews for people to see what I was talking about. I believe it was 1998 when Mikey thought he'd give it a shot. Michael T. Huyck was one of the first. In 1999, I went to my first World Horror Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. There were the people from the message boards in all their foul, odorous, but well-manicured flesh! In addition to Mikey Huyck, there was Brian Keene, Jack Ketchum, Monica J. O'Rourke, Richard Laymon, Mark McLaughlin, Ryan Harding, and way more. If memory serves, Michael was coming off a stint as editor of a highly praised Gothic Horror magazine called Carpe Noctem (lauded by such Horror writers as Poppy Z. Brite, Neil Gaiman, and Clive Barker), which fell on hard times after his departure. The original site is dead as is the 20th Anniversary Kickstarter re-animated site (it's sobering to realize how many well-regarded Horror magazines and websites through the years - many of them award winners - have gone extinct, deep into the double digits).
Michael was interested in getting back into it all and began writing reviews for me. These are the 18 reviews by Michael T. Huyck Jr. at Feo Amante's Horror Thriller. REVIEWS AND NEWS
