Rue Morgue

ROD GUDINO LEAVES RUE MORGUE MAGAZINE
Toronto, CANADA – Rod Gudino, founder of Rue Morgue Magazine and president of Marrs Media Inc., has announced he will be leaving his post as Editor-In-Chief this December, a post he has held for the past eight years. Gudino will be leaving the magazine to launch and develop Rue Morgue Cinema, the new wing in the company’s expanding operations.

“Film has been a goal right from the very beginning,” remarks Gudino, “but it’s a big step and I wanted to make sure everything was taken care of before I allowed myself to go in that direction. I hope to bring a new vision to the genre with the same quality and attention to detail that has made the magazine a leading name in the industry.”

New in the role of Editor-In-Chief is former managing editor Jovanka Vuckovic, who has been in preparation for the position for the past two-and-a-half years. Vuckovic will inaugurate her new post with the January 2006 issue of Rue Morgue, on stands Jan 2.

“Rod has always encouraged me to put my own stamp on the magazine – which I’ve been doing and will continue to do – without compromising the integrity or the spirit in which it was created,” says Vuckovic. “That spirit thrives within me and the rest of the Rue Morgue family, who believe strongly in what we’re doing for the genre. We’re all very proud of Rod and excited about the challenges that face us in 2006.”

Rue Morgue has much to celebrate; 2005 marked the opening of The Rue Morgue House of Horror, a funeral home purchased by the magazine and converted into an events theatre for all things macabre. The magazine’s second annual Festival of Fear Canadian National Horror Expo was also a huge success, attracting 30,000+ fans to meet world-renowned horror icons the likes of Clive Barker, Elvira, Crispin Glover, Tony Todd and many more. The company continues to have a presence with the weekly Rue Morgue Radio programme and monthly CineMacabre Movie Night events.

RUE MORGUE is Canada’s leading magazine of horror entertainment. Its glossy mainstream look and intelligent yet biting editorial have made it hugely popular with a widespread international readership. RUE MORGUE Magazine is distributed worldwide and is published monthly by the Canadian company Marrs Media Inc.

Kitty and the Midnight Hour

From Jeanne Cavelos
ODYSSEY WRITING WORKSHOP ANNOUNCES SUMMER 2006 SESSION

Since its inception in 1996, Odyssey has quickly become one of the most highly respected workshops for writers of fantasy, science fiction, and horror. Held each summer on the campus of Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH, the workshop runs for six weeks, and combines an intensive learning and writing experience with in-depth feedback on students' manuscripts. Odyssey provides up-and-coming genre writers the feedback, instruction, and guidance necessary to become professionals. Forty-six percent of Odyssey’s graduates have gone on to be published. Top authors, editors, and agents have served as guest lecturers at Odyssey, including George R. R. Martin, Harlan Ellison, Jane Yolen, Terry Brooks, Ben Bova, Ellen Datlow, Steve Rasnic Tem, Elizabeth Hand, Donald Maass, Shelia Williams, and Dan Simmons.

Odyssey is the only program of its kind run by an editor. Jeanne Cavelos, Odyssey’s founder and director, is a best-selling author and former senior editor at Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing, where she won the World Fantasy Award for her work. “I give the same unflinchingly honest, concrete, detailed feedback to students that I provided to professional authors,” Cavelos said. “That can be a shock for students, but it can also trigger rapid improvement. I'm constantly told by graduates that they learned more at Odyssey than they
learned in years of workshopping and creative writing classes."

The workshop runs from June 12-July 21, 2006. Class meets for 4 hours in the morning, 5 days a week, and students use the afternoons and evenings to write and critique each other’s work. Prospective students, aged 18 and up, apply from all over the world. The application deadline is APRIL 14.

Meet Our 2006 Special Writer-in-Residence:

This year Odyssey is pleased to host Robert J. Sawyer. Robert has been called "The dean of Canadian Science Fiction" by the Ottawa Citizen, and is one of only sixteen authors in history to win both the Nebula Award and the Hugo Award for Best Novel. He also has eight other Hugo nominations to his credit. He's won nine Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Awards ("Auroras"), as well as numerous other national and international awards. Known for his dedication and passion in teaching writing, he has helped many fantasy, science fiction, and horror writers through workshops at the University of Toronto, Ryerson University, and the Banff Center for the Arts.

Other Guest Lecturers:

The Odyssey workshop is also excited to welcome its 2006 guest lecturers: award-winning authors Melissa Scott, Jeff VanderMeer, Laurie J. Marks, and Christopher Golden; and award-winning editor and agent Shawna McCarthy. Lecturers share their own unique perspectives and critique student manuscripts.

Odyssey graduates:

Publications by Odyssey graduates are coming fast and furious, and are posted on the website. Barbara Campbell's book Heartwood came out last May from DAW Books. She attended Odyssey in 2000, and said this about the change the workshop made in her writing: "I now had the tools to analyze pacing, world-building, characterization (and my old pal--plot). . . . I ultimately transformed my wandering fantasy of 180,000 words into a 100,000-word novel I was ready to show my agent." The other volumes in the three-book Trickster's Game series will be out in 2006 and 2007.

Elaine Isaak, whose novel The Singer's Crown came out in October under the Eos imprint of HarperCollins, is from the class of 1997. She says, "The first two stories I ever sold would not have been written without Odyssey. . . . Jeanne has an eye for identifying the author's intent and the heart of the work, and offering useful advice about how to craft the work to be nearer to the dream." Look for the second book in her series, The Eunuch's Heir, in 2006.

Fans who have been following Carrie Vaughn's Kitty stories in Weird Tales are excited about the release of her novel, Kitty and the Midnight Hour, from Warner. The book has just been released and is on the USA Today Bestseller List. The second novel in the Kitty series, Kitty Goes to Washington, will be out in 2006.

Our location:

Odyssey is held on the lovely campus of Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH. Saint Anselm is one of the finest liberal arts colleges in the country, dedicated to excellence in education, and its campus provides a beautiful setting and high-quality facilities for Odyssey.

King Kong

REVIEWS
Carefully crafted marketing strategy means the original KING KONG, never before released on DVD, now has a place with the original SON OF KONG and MIGHTY JOE YOUNG. Lucky you, we fill you in on all the details of these movies and their corresponding DVD goodies ... or lack thereof.

BUT WAIT! The upcoming Peter Jackson film was not the first attempt to remake an old classic! In the US bicentennial year, 1976, Dino De Laurentis tried remaking the mighty ape in his own, "Me Generation" mold. Yes, it's KING KONG [1976]!

And of course, in 1998, if you can remember, they also remade MIGHTY JOE YOUNG with Bill Paxton and Charlize Theron.

NEWSFLASH: According to a story by Newsweek, Peter Jackson's KING KONG, while having all the gory gross stuff that Peter is famous for, will also be a "heartbreaking" movie. Oh shit! The first time someone tried that with Kong was in SON OF KONG, and that killed the franchise for RKO! The last time someone tried that was in 1976 for the first remake of KING KONG, and that expensive bastard tanked! No one wants to see a gruff but lovable, scrappy but misunderstood Kong! We want to see the original brutal as all get out Kong!

Read the story at Newsweek/Capturing Kong.

The Mummy [1999]
HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAY TO -
Of his 5 movies to date, 3 of them were Horror, so let's give a big Happy Birthday to
Actor
Oded Fehr (KILLER NET, THE MUMMY, THE MUMMY RETURNS, RESIDENT EVIL:Apocalypse, CHARMED [TV]) who is 35.
Our next birthday boy has made a career in that category that is one step below direct to video: direct to cable. Good luck finding a video, but you may catch him at 2 or 3 in the morning sometime on Cinemax or something.
Actor Maxwell Caulfield (
THE SUPERNATURALS, MIND GAMES, PROJECT ALIEN, SUNDOWN: The Vampire In Retreat, DANCE WITH DEATH, WAXWORK II, ANIMAL INSTINCTS, MAXIMUM FORCE 2, ALIEN INTRUDER, THE PERFECT TENANT, FACING THE ENEMY) is 46.
Megiddo
And this birthday boy is well known to fans of Italian Horror - and how! The Internet Movie Database has many of his horror credits listed as "SciFi" but, come on! Nearly all of them are alien monsters coming to earth and butchering everybody! Get real! Science Fiction? HA! Arthur C. Clarke that ain't! So Happy Birthday to
Actor
Franco Nero (I CRIMINALI DELLA GALASSIA, I DIAFANOIDI VENGONO DA MARTE, IL TERZO OCCHIO, LA MORTE VIENE DAL PIANETA AYTIN, GIORNATA NERA PER L'ARIETE, HITCH-HIKE, THE VISITOR, THE SALAMANDER, KAIMIKAZE 1989, THE GIRL, ALIEN TERMINATOR, DIE HARD 2, LA VOCE DEL SANGUE, MEGIDDO: The Omega Code 2, and I've gotta stop here because ol' Franco has made over 150 freaking movies!) who is 64 and still going strong. If you are one of those Horror fans whose tastes cross over into Westerns or Crime Dramas, Franco's other flicks won't leave you wanting. With 150+ films under his belt, the man has made crap and classics.
Writer Joe Eszterhas (
JAGGED EDGE, BETRAYED, BASIC INSTINCT, SLIVER, JADE) is 61.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAY TO -
Some actors, like writers, never make it to the "A-List" but diligently work throughout their careers as a second or third tier actor; aka character; aka supporting actor. Today's birthday boy is such a person, laying a strong foundation into every role he plays. When FINAL DESTINATION hit the theaters, I was wowed. I called it a classic of horror film making and I meant it. Years after, many Horror and action movies borrowed extensively from FINAL DESTINATION, cementing its reputation as an original. The sequel, FINAL DESTINATION 2? Not so much. It did what most Hollywood sequels do: increased the body count and lowered the context, all while giving you a less involving story. Will FINAL DESTINATION 3 in 2006 be worse than the second, or as good as the first? While yer waiting to find out, check out the new FINAL DESTINATION 3 trailer, Here.

RIP FOR MOUSTAPHA AL AKKAD
If there are two things that Moustapha was known for, its making religious movies and backing Horror movies. Some combination! Moustapha earned controversy and honors for his 1976 film, "The Messenger" - a story about the birth of Islam - that he both produced and directed. The movie treated its subject matter with respect, but when making religious or political movies, you just can't please everybody. What Moustapha is known for to us, is the fact that he got on board, as an executive producer, and backed every HALLOWEEN movie ever made since the very beginning when Debra Hill and John Carpenter had this really great idea!Among US audiences, Akkad will always be remembered for the HALLOWEEN movies. But among the Arab community, Mustapha will always be remembered for producing and directing the greatest film about the life of the prophet Mohammad ever made. And Al Quaeda murdered him, his daughter, and over 50 other people in Wednesday's bombing attacks. Al Bawaba

Also, our pal Jazan Wild was there signing his new comic book "Carnival of Souls" and his rock CD of the same title. Eric Pigors was nursing the flu and he was missed.

CONTEST
When I was but a child - and I mean a really small child - way early in the morning while I was getting ready for school, this whacked out children's program would come on. It was called The Hilarious House Of Frightenstein. Mom would see Vincent Price on there and assumed it was safe. It had Vincent Price! But it was just loopy! It had this thing that would come to be called "Canadian Humor". It was one of those ultra rare shows that, when it wasn't funny, it was fun. It had cornball skits and bits and wasn't educational programming at all. I guess the demographic would have been "Goth Children's Horror Show for the Hee Haw set."

That was back in the 1970s. The 70s, man! I never thought I'd see that demented show again, but with DVD, all things are possible.

Now Horror writer Thomas Sipos (HALLOWEEN CANDY) has this to say:

WIN A FREE COPY OF 'THE HILARIOUS HOUSE OF FRIGHTENSTEIN'
[HollywoodInvestigator.com] Do YOU want to win a FREE DVD copy of Volume 1 of The Hilarious House of Frightenstein?

Volume 1 has Vincent Price and Billy Van!

Four episodes from this 'cult classic' 1970s Canadian TV show, full of monster music & comedy!

October Moon

From Tempe Video
THERE'S SOMETHING MIGHTY QUEER ABOUT THAT HORROR

In the past few years, a new subgenre of gay horror films has emerged. Sadly, most of the movies have been produced purely to make a quick buck and either played it safe by trying to appease to a straight audience (usually women, who could also enjoy the hunks on display) or were simply cookie-cutter, stereotypical stories that didn't accurately reflect the gay lifestyle.

Writer/director Jason Paul Collum (SOMETHING TO SCREAM ABOUT) has set out to change that. On February 14th, 2006, Tempe DVD will debut OCTOBER MOON, a brand-new production which is squarely aimed at the queer horror audience but which also has a story to tell that will appeal to anyone who's ever had an uncontrollable crush, regardless of their sexual orientation.

Elliot, a shy young man, is shunned by his family, friends and fiancée when he falls for another man, Corin. Unfortunately, Corin already has a significant other, and as Elliot finds himself rejected at every turn, he slips into paranoia and rage, determined to get what he desires most...

Taking a cue from such tales of obsessive love as FATAL ATTRACTION, Tempe's OCTOBER MOON stars horror legends Judith O'Dea (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD) and Brinke Stevens (SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE) along with Tina Ona Paukstelis (ASWANG: THE UNEARTHING), Jeff Dylan Graham (DEAD & ROTTING) and a host of talented newcomers. Director Jason Paul Collum is no stranger to horror, having helmed a critically-praised documentary on B-movie actresses called SOMETHING TO SCREAM ABOUT (also available on Tempe DVD) which debuted on Showtime earlier this year.

Tempe and Collum's B+Boy Productions have an extensive publicity blitz underway, with recent coverage in Instinct, Scene and FANGORIA magazines as well as an appearance on the L.A. talk show On Q Live with Collum and stars Judith O'Dea & Brinke Stevens. The film is also currently being screened to rave reviews across the nation which continues to heighten interest in this release! The OCTOBER MOON DVD also includes a 10-minute featurette on the making of the film, audio commentary with the director and star, 4 still galleries, weblinks and trailers.

For more information on OCTOBER MOON, visit the official website where you can see the trailer and making-of featurette before its debut on DVD.

ANOTHER FEO AMANTE ALUMNI
We spoke of Harry Shannon (BAD SEED, NIGHT OF THE BEAST) earlier this month in regards to the finish in filming of his first movie, DEAD AND GONE (we first reported on this last year). Harry wrote the news item himself and sent it on to us with some pics from the shoot. Just a few years ago, Harry wrote reviews for Feo Amante's Horror Home Page to promote his work and himself - and because he's just a helluva nice guy!

But in addition to writing successful scripts, Harry also writes books and if you want to meet the man in person, you should be in the Los Angeles area this coming weekend.

Saturday, November 12 at 4:30 p.m. at
The Mystery Bookstore,
1036 C Broxton Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90024
310-209-0415,
Harry Shannon signs EYE OF THE BURNING MAN (A Mick Callahan Novel).

Controversial radio psychologist Mick Callahan, introduced in MEMORIAL DAY, seems to have straightened his life out at last: he's clean and sober, working, he has a girlfriend, he's saving money. But when Mary, the crack addict who saved his life in the first book, shows up to ask for help, he can't refuse. and when someone snatches Mary from Mick's house, he tracks them down, all the way to Nevada's bizarre Burning Man festival.

You could be the next Chris Gage or Harry Shannon or even yourself. It takes a lot more than just writing for this website, but we're a damn good start. Check out our Guidelines page and get started on your future.

The Cage

From Jason Brannon
RAGE IN THE CAGE

To accompany the pending release of my novel, THE CAGE, I have designed a game, not wholly unlike the old Choose Your Own Adventure books. These characters, however, inhabit the world of THE CAGE, where creatures like The Jersey Devil and The Chupacabra seek delicate humans to devour.

Some outcomes will mean instant death. Others will provide rewards like a chance to win prizes as well as a chance to read Chapter 2 of the novel.

Chapter 1 is still available on my Blog: jason-brannon.blogspot.com/

I basically just wrote this for fun and as a way to expand on the world created in THE CAGE. Hopefully, there are enough possible outcomes to keep you reading for a while.

Get in the game.

ACTION THRILLER NOVELIST DAVID MORRELL TO PEN NEW STORYLINE FOR MARVEL'S CAPTAIN AMERICA
NEW YORK - Considered by many to be the father of the modern action novel, award-winning author David Morrell will be the creative mastermind behind a new Captain America project, slated for next year.

With a complex body of work that traverses the Horror, Espionage and Thriller genres, Morrell is a giant in the literary world. He is the author of First Blood, the award-winning novel in which Rambo was created. He has written numerous best-selling thrillers, including The Brotherhood of the Rose (the basis for a highly rated NBC mini-series), The Fifth Profession, Extreme Denial and Assumed Identity. Most recently, he wrote the dark suspense-thriller Creepers (CDS Books, September 2005). Two of his novellas received Stoker awards from the Horror Writers Association.

In his first comic book writing effort, Morrell will bring his action writing talent to Captain America, in the story of a young Marine, Corporal James Newman, who is on his tour of duty in Afghanistan. In the midst of a brutal fire fight with enemy forces, Captain America leads him out of the battle while helping him rescue his wounded comrades who are trapped by enemy fire. When the smoke clears, Newman is unsure if Captain America was really there, or a hallucination in the stress of battle.

"As the creator of Rambo, Morrell is known for heroes who've been trained to handle action and danger. He is a master of weaving action into a thought-provoking plot with more than a few twists, and I am eager to see the thrills he has in store for the newest installments of Captain America," said Joe Quesada, Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics.

"I want the characters to feel real," says David Morrell. "In particular I want the reader to believe in Captain America. Also, I want to explore the major theme of what it means to be a hero in this troubled modern world. I hope the story is deeply moving as well as exciting."

REAL WORLD HORROR
From the terrorist attack in India that claimed over 57 lives to the ongoing riots in France that are only now being revealed (robberies in the poor suburbs of Paris - and you haven't seen poverty in an industrialized nation until you've seen these suburbs - about 70,000 robberies a month - every month!). The French government has a foul underbelly and the citizens of France are suffering from it. And while we're on that note - feoamante.com doesn't bash the citizens of France or any other country. I get a fair amount of email from France and - so far - its all good.

But the government of Lagardere, the number one supplier of small arms to the world and the media giant of France (their radio stations organized a number of anti-American protests prior to the Iraqi war), has been busted on several fronts. Despite the disingenuous French government protests against war in Iraq (No Blood for Oil!), we now know that for well over a decade France, Germany, Russia, and the UN were running a billion dollar plus kickback campaign designed to enrich, themselves, Saddam and to hell with his people. And they succeeded. That's the real Blood for Oil, and it was being run by the very people who pointed their bloody fingers at the US.

New evidence points to the French government actually creating false intelligence reports to fool the UK and the US into fighting a war in Iraq concerning Weapons of Mass Destruction, something Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, and Bill Clinton believed in (and passed laws concerning) for years. The point was to bring down these two governments, putting the French government in a better position of power - to what end?

Now the French government, which has led the way in Europe for fomenting rabid anti-Americanism (unlike the will of their people - Want to read one of the best selling books in France of the new millennium? Read French author, Jean-Francois Revel's ANTI-AMERICANISM), is being destroyed by Muslim youth gangs. Understand that I'm not spewing dramatic invective here, I really mean that, to date, the French police, military, and Special Operations have been beat back by a well organized, well armed, and inhumanly vicious gang of Muslim youths that number in the tens of thousands.

And you know what? I bet the Red Cross will be there. Just saying.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -
Any monster aficionado worth the salt of Lot's wife knows that magical TAH DAH! radiation makes tiny things grow big (THEM), normal sized things grow bigger (old SPIDERMAN, THE HULK), and in either case, turns everyone and everything into monsters (GODZILLA, THE HIDEOUS SUN DEMON, THE BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS). Or at least you would know that if you really believed in 1950s monster movies and early 1960s comic books (Okay, so regular radiation won't do that, but how about GAMMA RADIATION??? How about a radioactive spider?)
If she were still alive, one of the smartest Poles in history (she was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1847) would have told you that radiation doesn't turn you into a powerful monster; a lizard; bring you back from the dead; or do anything other than kill you! Our birthday girl learned that the hard way when she died from leukemia brought on by overexposure to radiation (actually, she was having skin problems and a slew of other ailments brought on by radiation - the blood cancer just got her first!).
Today's audiences are, of course, far smarter and sophisticated than their dumb ol' grandparents! We know that you can't get monsters from an overdose of radiation - that's stupid! Giant monsters would magically TAH DAH! require TAH DAH! genetics (
THE KINDRED, AKIRA, JURASSIC PARK, DEEP BLUE SEA, BATS, RESIDENT EVIL, SPIDERMAN: the movie) or nano-somethings (PREY) or genetic-nanos, (HULK: The Movie) So happy birthday to
Scientist Marie Sklodowska Curie (Discovered the element, radium) who would be 158 today. Granted, that's pretty damn old for anybody, but who knows what's possible: she WAS exposed to an awful lot of radiation, right? You don't buy that? Well would you buy genetic-nano-radiation? Yeah, I bet you would!

From Mike Philbin
CHIMERICANA BOOKS RELEASES HORROR QUARTERLY

Horror Quarterly was the most extreme online venue for those freaks and weirdos interested in the more outlandish expressions of the art and words of the horror genre. Only now is the world mourning its loss (especially in Falusia! They're all torn up about it in Falusia! -Feo).

Oxford, UK (PRWEB) November 2, 2005 - Writer-artist Mike Philbin had published a few short stories and interviews in online UK horror zine Terror Tales (back when John B Ford was at the reins), mostly as the wacky alter-ego Hertzan Chimera.

In its dying days, Terror Tales had lost its focus and the content was drying up. John knew about Philbin's very strong opinions of his zine and one writer-gathering night in a pub in London asked him if he'd like to take over the running of the zine.

Thus Horror Quarterly was born (Philbin did try to keep the name Terror Tales at first but it needed something even fresher and more professional sounding as a flagship horror title). Horror Quarterly was all about theme - it contained not only fiction but also interviews, articles and features.

Issue one's theme was Body Horror - all the stories and articles related to aspects of body mutilation, body horror in the media, genetic freaks.

Issue two's theme was Fcuk Horror - this was an intentional ploy on Philbin's behalf as editor, there came back many 'interpretations' of the fcuk-horror theme and I never explained myself, just published the most gut-wrenching work.

Issue three's theme was Blood Horror - diseases of the blood, fiction of the blood, menstruation for men.

As Philbin put it, "There is something very liberating about being an editor, and something even more liberating about being a publisher. You get to not only choose the best, but also mould the best of the submissions to your editorial ideal. And the writers have been only too willing to polish and reconsider themes, endings, beginnings of their works when they know it's for the good of
the whole."

In this best of HORROR QUARTERLY (the first three issues), there'll be a best article, best interview, best 'metal', five of the best stories and the classic three-part article from Quentin S Crisp exploring Japanese Horror to end each issue.

DEAD AND GONE COMES TO LIFE

(FeoNote: A few years ago, Harry began promoting himself and his work by writing for feoamante.com. You can find his work Here).
Okay, I don't know about anyone else, but I've actually had a few dreams come true, and I'm often amazed by how flat and anti-climactic an experience that can be. Yet when I found myself on a movie set in Angeles Crest Forest, staring at a decrepit redwood cabin dressed exactly like the one I'd first imagine almost a year before, I couldn't help but feel a little chill.

Harry the Redneck Sheriff
HARRY THE REDNECK SHERIFF W/ LOCAL YOKEL
If I tuned out the gaffers and grips and camera equipment, and just ignored the two gorgeous makeup girls patrolling the cast in search of shiny spots, it wasn’t hard at all to drop completely into the decidedly weird world of my first produced script, “Dead and Gone.” deadandgonethemovie.com. The producers had discovered a perfect location, just forty five minutes away from LA’s San Fernando Valley. It had dense trees, a long stream, a funky dirt road, the haunted cabin and even extra buildings for costume, makeup and equipment. Hell, even enough electricity to make the magic happen.

Director/Photographer Yossi Sasson (darkhaze.net) was already four days into the SAG shoot, working twelve hours a day, racing from place to place to get all the key scenes and enough set ups for the “coverage” that can save your ass in an editing room. I’d been a part of the process from the beginning, when a vague idea in Yossi's head had sparked my concept for the script, and had the rare pleasure of participating in the casting, financial discussions, makeup tests, and a gazillion script revisions for both creative and budgetary reasons.

Harry on the set
HARRY BEHIND THE SCENES
And now here I was, getting into costume for my small part as Sheriff Johnson, a decent enough redneck who appears only at the end of the movie. I hadn’t acted on camera in almost thirty-five years! (Although small voice kept telling me I’d screw up my lines and completely embarrass myself, my scenes—with a lovely actress named Gillian Shure as Constable Kate Eidson--went perfectly).

I tried to take it all in: Gillian in her uniform, sipping a soda, Yossi hustling the crew over to the police car while yelling something about “Hollywooding” the shot and giving my image a “haircut.” Meanwhle, UK soap star Quentin Jones wandered the set in torn and bloody clothing, deep into character as the protagonist, Jack Wade. Various bloody folks, dead and undead, loitered near the catering table, inhaling a steady diet of sugar, caffine and chocolate to keep their energy up.

Sheriff Johnson comes to town.
WHEN SHERIFF JOHNSON COMES TO TOWN
We had a lot of yellow jackets in the area all through the outdoor shoot (Yossi actually stepped on a nest the following day and got several stings, but shrugged them off to get the next shot, thus earning the undying respect of cast and crew). The second half of the film was done indoors, on a set that served as the interior of the cabin. We all thought we’d died and gone to heaven, pun intended.

Anyway, I did my scene. And did it again because the light was wrong. And again because of a sound problem. And again for a safety. And again from another angle and then another and another. And in the process remembered what slow, difficult work it can be to make a movie, even briskly on a tight budget. The sun went down, and we wrapped just as we were losing the light. I turned in my costume and drove down the mountain to go back to work on a novel.

But you know what? The tingle still hasn't gone away. Maybe because I can honestly say that the people involved in this project, from Yossi on down, were so damned nice, so uniformly behind what we were trying to do, and so appreciative of the cast that they applauded the end of many takes, that I honestly feel “Dead and Gone” will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience - and not only because it was my first produced script. Rocker Ben Moody, Tenacious D’s Kyle Gass, all of the people involved, made working on this one pure joy. I should only be so lucky next time… Assuming there is a next time.

You can follow updates and learn more about the film at

Er... Hostel? Ah, that doesn't make any sense. Anyway, if you loved Eli Roth's CABIN FEVER, his new film, HOSTEL, might be right up your ... wherever you put stuff up in somewhere.

Man, I'm just not right today.

On the other hand, if you were indifferent to CABIN FEVER, you may still be interested to know that HOSTEL is also presented by Quentin Tarantino (FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, KILL BILL). What's more, the movie is brought to you by Lion's Gate Entertainment (PI, AMERICAN PSYCHO, FRAILTY, THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, SAW, UNDEAD, SAW II). R.S. Rhine's Satan's 3-Ring Circus of Hell

FINAL SIGNING
A few years ago, Robert Steven Rhine wanted to hearken back to the good old days of E.C. Horror comics like Tales From The Crypt. Together with publisher Frank Forte of Asylum Press, they released the top selling Horror comic, Selected Readings From Satan's Powder Room. That was such a hit that it was soon followed by Chicken Soup For Satan, and finally, Satan Gone Wild. The covers were high gloss and garish colors, created by Forte. The insides were filled with Rhine's stories and work from some of the best comic artists of the day. On the heals of such success, Robert and Frank decided to publish a massive graphic novel collection of the three comics coupled with twice as many stories and one shots. From around the world Robert brought together established artists and new discoveries. Robert, googling through the Internet, found my glowing reviews and with an introduction by Del Howison of Dark Delicacies Bookstore, asked if I would write the Foreword (that part nobody reads).

I've since become a part of the devilish crew and had quite a few adventures traveling from one signing to the next. But now the year is winding down and people are getting ready for the holidays. The year's last signing for Robert Steven Rhine's SATAN'S 3-RING CIRCUS OF HELL will take place in Hollywood, California at Meltdown Comics.

For comic book and animation fans, this is an unparelleled chance to get autographs from some of the hottest names in the business.

Salem's Lot

From Sara Bogush and Feo Amante
SALEM'S LOT: ILLUSTRATED

Upon its initial publication in 1975, SALEM'S LOT was recognized as a landmark work. The novel has sold millions of copies in various editions, but it wasn’t until Centipede Press published a special limited edition in 2004 that Stephen King’s masterpiece was brought to brilliant and eerie life. With the addition of fifty pages of material deleted from the 1975 manuscript as well as material that has since been modified by King, an introduction by him, and two short stories related to the events of the novel, this edition represents the text as the author envisioned it.

This is nothing unusual for long time King fans. As many will remember he gave a similiar treatment, some years ago, to his novel THE STAND. These reworkings not only restore the author's original vision - for better or worse - they also allow the author, like a singer, to explore some familiar territory from an older, different perspective. The effect can be captivating (as long as the original work remains available and not Lucas'd into oblivion)

Featuring a new introduction by the author, fifty pages of deleted and alternate scenes, two short stories related to events in the novel, and the creepy photographs of Jerry Uelsmann, this edition (based on the limited-run 2004 edition by Centipede Press) is being released by Doubleday in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the publication of this horror classic.

The "Blame America First" loopy left wing fringe of the U.S. have found a real pal in Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez. He not only buys into every Anti-US conspiracy theory, he expounds on them. This latest rant was found through news website, Brietbart.com. Brietbart is largely a mouthpiece for Drudgereport.com, but this story is from AFP.
