Saw II

SAW II SWAG
Many were invited, a few entered, but only a handful properly followed the rules. Now the game is OVER. You can find the SAW II SWAG winners at The WINNERS page.

Wassmore!

This past opening weekend, SAW II brought in more than 7.5 times what it took to make it, making SAW II profitable nearly four times over in just its first weekend! That's way over what far lesser fare like DOOM and THE FOG [2005] brought in. Very cool! Word is already out that Lion's Gate will make SAW III, so look for three severed fingers for next year.
Nov. 1 UPDATE: SAW II has broken all records! SAW II is now the highest grossing Halloween weekend film release of all time!

QUICK BITES
On Monday, October 31 at 8PM and 9PM (ET) ABC Family Channel will air two new episodes of "Scariest Places on Earth" hosted by Linda Blair. Lisa Manetti of The Chancery House and Robert Dunbar, were interviewed at the Lizzie Borden House.

The first centers on Dracula's castle in Transylvania. The second episode - entitled "Urban Legends II" -- will feature a visit to Lizzie Borden's house in Fall River, Massachusetts ... Lisa and Robert will be among the luckless souls wandering those haunted corridors. Tune in if you can and let Lisa and Robert know what you think.

HALLOWEEN GAG ORDER
New Story: If you're looking for some new Halloween-themed stories, you may want to check out the new anthology Wicked Karnival Halloween Horror. Over 200 pages of fun and gruesome seasonal offerings. Yes, my story "Carried on the Wind" appears among great work by the likes of Rick Hautala, Graham Masterton, James A. Moore, James Newman, Robert Walker, Craig Phillips, J.G. Faherty, Jenny Schwartz, Stephen Wilson, Darren Franz, Michael West, Richard Pitaniello, Tim Clifton, Keith Gouveia, Jen Galasso, and many, many more. Pick up two, one for you and one for your best enemy!

OLDER STORY Also available in print is Wicked Karnival #3 (Revamped), which includes my story "Lead Me Into Temptation," my piece on horror as literary element, and an in-depth interview, along with fiction, nonfiction, and art by a host of talented folks.

WFC 2005 If all this isn't scary enough, I'll be attending the World Fantasy Convention in Madison, WI, next week (November 3-6), nestled between the shores of beautiful Lakes Mendota and Monona. My little corner of the programming is a panel on book reviewing:

The Art of Review & Criticism
Saturday 12:00-1:00PM
Capitol A

Our panel of experts reviews the state of the "art" of fantasy review and criticism. Is there too much out there? Too little? Are reviews helping or harming the field? Where can a reader go for reliable reviews? And, of course, what practical things can a writer do to insure a fair review? William Gagliani, Paula Guran, Russell Letson, Michael Levy, Gary K. Wolfe.

Of course, I'll also be signing at the autograph session Friday night, so come on up and say Hello if you're in the neighborhood!

See for further World Fantasy Convention program information, schedules, rates, and so on.

I hope we'll have a chance to meet there. I'll have a few copies of the first edition of my Stoker-nominated novel WOLF'S TRAP on hand, as well as a few anthologies in which I've had stories, and I'll be glad to sign them for you.

NEW CONCERT PICS Steve Hackett and Genesis fans, watch for some NEW Steve Hackett Acoustic Trio live photos, coming soon to my website!

HORROR KUNG FU TV

I was on a Live TV cable show today called Horror Kung FU TV. Kevin Klemm also came along with his corpses. The show will air again on Adelphia Cable on Saturday Nov. 5th at 2:00 a.m. The host, Nightshadow, spoke about the "Satan's Circus" book, my comic books and Girls and Corpses. This was truly one of the most bizarre experiences and TV shows ever taped.

DOOM BUGGIES
Because of Halloween, it is time to remember that cars also play an important role in Horror movies. From the Evil Black Cuda of PHANTASM to the ever present Raimi mobile in the EVIL DEAD movies (and actually makes an appearance in nearly every Sam Raimi movie). And those who've visited any of the Disney theme parks with The Haunted Mansion, have rode through the house in "Doom Buggies".

And of course, Lily's gift to Herman, the Munster Koach, and Grandpa Munster's hot rod "Dragula" (yes, The Dragula that Rob Zombie sang about), both created by George Barris.

Tommorrow in the Los Angeles area, George's son, Brett Barris, and his famous "Kargolye Hearse" will be participating in the World's Longest Hearse procession at the Peterman Auto Museum,
6060 Wilshire Blvd
Saturday October 29th 1- 2 p.m.

Die Earthman

From M.F. Korn
DOINGS ON ALL HALLOWS EVE

I just wanted to mention for everyone and folks local to Louisiana that I will be a guest author on the "Scott Rogers: Around Town show this Sunday, at 8 am central Earth time, the day before Halloween.  They want me to read a twenty year old story, where just between us, it is me trying to mimic H.P. Lovecraft back when I was just starting to sell stories. Nevertheless, I will be orating this much like Peter Ustinov, or Edwin Booth, or Benjamin Disraeli in orotund phraseology in peer at the House of Lords of British Parliament.  Not! Think Rip Taylor...Jerry Lewis...

You might want to pick up a wretched tome just out by me, MF Korn, DF Lewis (winner of British Fantasy Award), Mike Philbin, and Dave Matthew (seminal reviewer for Interzone).  DIE EARTHMAN DIE: TALES OF HORROR AND SF contains 34 tales of bone-chilling horror and mindblowing science fiction!

Rosa parks Arrested

RIP FOR ROSA
Rosa Parks died last night, and because of women like her, my children will never have to witness the sick weakness of one human demanding that another human give up their seat, by force of delusional superiority and by law. Because a shy Rosa Parks sparked a movement, the very idea that someone could harrass my wife and I based on our racial differences, and get away with it by law, is gone forever. Because of Rosa Parks and her incredibly simple demand to be treated as a human being, I live a better, happier life than I would have had in 1955.

Rosa Parks made a timid, quiet, peaceful statement in 1955, and it echoed across the US with the sound of a powerful thunder. She changed the rules for herself, her race, and all citizens of the United States, for the better.

Such a simple act, such a powerful thunder.

Thank you Rosa Parks.

TRUE HORROR
Austin Stevens is a snake scientist (herpetologist), and as such, this particular herpetologist isn't simply fond of snakes: he's freaking mad about them. This guy is ape for snakes the way Wallace is for cheese. I've been catching his act on Animal Planet, where Austin does things like hand feed Gila Monsters, chase after the world's largest rattlesnakes (like those found in Arizona and New Mexico), wrestle giant Anacondas, and pat a King Cobra on the head. It was this last part that made me realize that I could never have anything in common with this man. Right after he risked his life to gingerly, cautiously, nervously, pat the king cobra on the head (If he's bit, he'd die before he could ever make it to the hospital), Austin then announced in hushed tones, "This is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream!"

The hell? I don't have dreams of patting deadly snakes on the head. Nightmares maybe. But dreams? I've dreamed of being rich and dreamed of naked fun with a wide variety of Playboy centerfolds and certain singers and actresses - but I just never gave a damn for petting a deadly king cobra on the noggin. Or, for that matter, tickling grizzlies or flossing Great Whites. No appeal there at all.

Now no doubt, if Austin and I ever met, we could find some kind of common ground. Our fondness for martial arts, photography, writing, and perhaps hammering down a brew or two. But when he breathlessly announced that giving a king cobra a pitty pat on its angry melon was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, I wrote him right off.

Which got me to thinking: when people from different cultures simply hear of the other's fondest wishes - do they immediately think "I could never understand this guy's life!"?

I ask because sometimes you wonder why there are so many problems in the world, and other times you wonder if you are part of the problem. In the realm of Horror writing, perhaps its something for a character to consider. 'Am I part of the problem?'

And if so, what problem?

Wolf Pack

From Edo van Belkom
EDO VAN BELKOM NETS SILVER BIRCH NOMINATION

Edo van Belkom's first novel for young readers, WOLF PACK has been honored with a spot on the short list for the prestigious Silver Birch Award.

The Silver Birch is one of several "Tree" awards in an Ontario-wide program of which over 200,000 readers participated last year. The Forest of Reading Program is an initiative of the Ontario Library Association which encourages the best in Canadian writing, Canadian authors, and the enjoyment of reading. Between October 2005 and June 2006 students from across Ontario will read nominated books and vote for their favorites, with the winners in each category presented their awards at a ceremony at Harbourfront in Toronto next year.

The Forest of Reading categories include: Blue Spruce (Picture Books); Silver Birch (Grades 4-6); Red Maple (Grades 6-9); and White Pine (Grades 10-12).

"I'm ecstatic," said van Belkom. "Award attention is always nice, but the Silver Birch means that countless students from all across Ontario will be reading my book, and for a writer that's reward enough by itself."

This is the second award nod for WOLF PACK which was honored in July 2005 with the Aurora Award, Canada's top prize for speculative writing. It was the third Aurora win for van Belkom, who has also won a Stoker Award presented by the Horror Writers Association.

WOLF PACK was published in October 2004 by Tundra Books. A sequel, LONE WOLF was published in October 2005. Edo van Belkom's two previous works for young readers are the anthologies BE AFRAID! (A CLA Young Adult Book of the Year Finalist) and BE VERY AFRAID! (An Aurora Award winner).

Queen of the Damned

ANNE FINDS GOD - RIGHT WHERE SHE LEFT HIM
It was in her 18th year of life that Anne Rice (QUEEN OF THE DAMNED) turned her back on the Catholic church and started writing soft core S&M books in the form of Vampire Horror. And she was quite good at Vampire homoeroticism too. In fact, more than any other person, Anne inspired an uncountable number of writers to start writing modern Vampire Horror stories, replete with romance and sex and many even passing through Anne's locales of France and New Orleans. But a number of death and near death experiences in her life has sent her back to the fold so to speak. So want to know what she's writing now? Newsweek will be publishing the following story in their October 31 issue.

The Gospel According to Anne.

CPM IS FIRST ANIME COMPANY TO PROVIDE VIDEO PROGRAMMING FOR IPOD
New York, NY (October 21, 2005) - Central Park Media proudly announced today that it is the first anime company in the world to provide content for Apple's new video-capable iPod. Visitors can now download the first episode of Central Park Media's upcoming Armored Trooper VOTOMS at www.centralparkmedia.com/ipod/ as well as view the trailer for the shockingly horrific KAKURENBO: Hide & Seek, scheduled to premiere on a special pre-Halloween midnight broadcast on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, Saturday, October 29, and Hammerboy, winner of numerous prestigious awards on both sides of the Pacific. In the coming days and weeks, Central Park Media will be making available more full episodes and trailers to best-selling CPM anime including Descendants of Darkness, Revolutionary Girl Utena, and Shadow Star Narutaru, among hundreds of other titles.

"Releasing episodes and trailers for the iPod is only natural for Central Park Media. CPM has always been the pre-eminent innovator in the anime world," said Newton Grant, CPM's Director of Business Development. "We were the first to release anime on CD-ROM, DVD, and PSP downloads, and the first to offer manga and manhwa as Digi-press downloads, so now the iPod is perfectly natural for us."

Central Park Media currently offers downloadable content for the Sony PSP at CPM/PSP and has entire volumes of manga and manhwa online at CPM/Digipress.

Peter Tatara, CPM's fan community liaison executive, added, "It is a well-known fact that anime fans are the earliest adopters of new technology hardware and software. We are sure that they will quickly become a major customer base for video iPods, so we want to ensure that they can enjoy their favorite CPM titles on this new device.”

While CPM's iPod video programs are available only at the CPM website at this time, the company expects to make its programming available at the Apple iTunes website once negotiations are completed. No schedule for launching on iTunes has been announced at this time.

Mind Ripper 2

THE PEOPLE'S METAL- I MEAN, AGGRO!
Heavy Metal ain't what it used to be, which is a good thing unless yer an old fart (Why back in my day, EMPORER would have crushed all of these here new fangled bands, by cracky!). Over the decades, Heavy Metal became an alloy with elements of punk, rap, and even disco thrown in (remember JUDAS PRIEST's Turbo Lover? KISS's I Was Made For Lovin' You?), and onward into industrial, techno, and more. All sides fought against it, of course. Sascha of KMFDM is known for long fighting against Heavy Metal and the very idea of using "real musicians" (but he got old and gave in). But there will always be those old stalwarts who refuse to soil their music with Metal (yeah, sure! "Aggro" IS Metal on a synthesizer, you marketing nippleheads!). Now Van Richter Records - Your Aggro-Industrial Label - is throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks, again!

MIND RIPPER II is the second in a compilation series which contains songs from the Van Richter Records (why the hell do new music companies keep using the "records" moniker in their names? Buncha old farts!) catalogue titles VR1010-1022. Featured artists include TESTIFY, THE FAIR SEX, PLASTIC NOISE EXPERIENCE, SIELWOLF, DEATH & HORROR Inc and GIRLS UNDER GLASS.

The Fair Sex, contribute with two track off the double retrospective CD "The Dark Ages". Heavyweight Gothic pioneers Girls Under Glass add one track each off the "Nightmares" and "Frozen" CDs. Testify, contribute a remix off "Crack the Mind" mixed by the seminal band "Die Warzau", and a track off their latest release "Triviality Beyond Acceptance". Plastic Noise Experience add two tracks from their latest and last record "Noised" as a duo, and one unreleased track. Toronto Canada's Darkwave Industrial Death & Horror Inc add two tracks off the sought after release "Transmissions from the Chemical Land". Sielwolf, contribute two tracks off the "Nachtstrom" and "Magnum Force" releases.

Not bad for a company that started out at Georgia Tech University (Go Yellowjackets!).

Anyway, this compilation is a great introduction and representation of the Aggro, Electro, Darkwave and Experimental sub genres of Industrial music - at least, Van Richter Records would like you to think so.

Preview Tracks.

OH! AND HE LOOKED GOTHIC!
Remember how the media breathlessly reported the Columbine, Colorado massacre? Remember how they were interviewing, not only the children at the affected school, but kids at pretty much any damn school anywhere in the country? Remember how schools across the country started suspending or even expelling kids who wore black? The popular cliques had a field day, singling them out. Suddenly the various flavors of gangbangers, with their drive-by shootings and rapes, were no longer the "real" threat. They were given a pass. The kids who dressed in Black Gothic Chic were the real threat.

The cowardly beating death of Pamela Vitale (wife of lawyer and TV legal pundit Daniel Horowitz) has coughed up a suspect. Police have found their likely suspect in the form of one 16 year old youth. What does the media know about him so far? Well, Michelle Locke, of the (Ugh!) Associated Press , apparently hung out at the suspect's high school, telling everyone the suspect's name, (he's under age and he hasn't even been charged yet - and Locke is telling his classmates his name! Nice!) and asking if anyone would like to be in newspapers telling the nation what they knew about the suspect. FoxNews.com and ABCNews.com are running with the Associated Press story. On TeeVee, NBC reporters went into detail about the suspect, saying that, among the other things the cowardly murderer did, was to carve a "Gothic symbol" into the back of Vitale.

Which is a bare-faced LIE!

According to the police and other news sources, some sick shit carved a cross into Pamela's back. A cross is a Christian symbol, people. Not Satanism, not Gothic, not even Islamic. It's a Christian symbol. Look for the Christian who abuses women and you've found your murderer (yes, I know that's a specious statement - savor the irony). CBS News used some of the Associated Press story, and did their own investigating, delivering a rather more factual report -minus all the shrill anti-goth handwringing in Locke's story.

Understand that this is not a slight against the police who are investigating Pamela's murder. In fact, they've gone on record as saying that they are still investigating. This is a slam on Fox News, NBC News, and anyone else who tries to skew this as a "Eeek! Beware of teens in black clothes!" alert. Already Marilyn Manson's name is being bandied about, even though there is nothing to suggest that the suspect even listens to MM. This is reminiscent of the Columbine murders as well, because the Media woo-wooed about Marilyn Manson in that one too, even though the Columbine murderers were also white supremacists and would've never listened to MM, who is Jewish.

I've wrote about a number of Associated Press stories this year. And how many of them caused real damage because of their "inventive" reporting. At this point, AP is fast becoming the Weekly World News of information.

Southern Ghosts specializes in setting up overnight events at various haunted locations throughout the United States. Guests are offered the opportunity to become paranormal field investigators for the weekend and learn how research is obtained. Some of this evidence will be shown at this party.

Southern Ghosts owners, Ray Couch and Jack Roth, who also host Southern Ghosts Radio on AM 540 WFLA on Saturday nights at midnight, strive to provide an enriching experience on all their events. "It's all about obtaining knowledge and having a good time in the process," says Roth, who will attend the party as a "dead" Confederate soldier.

The cost is $10 payable at the door, which automatically enters you into prize drawings for free downtown Orlando pub tours and various overnight events throughout the United States. A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to the Hurricane Katrina & Rita Relief Efforts.

For more information on this event visit SouthernGhosts.

RAISE YOUR DEFIANT PURPLE FINGER
If I'm going to keep you up to date, from time to time, on the Horrors going on in the real world, its only fair to also give you the good news when it happens. For the second time and on time, the Iraqi people have voted and moved one step closer to Democracy and independence. At this rate, they are moving far faster than the U.S. did in creating its own independence and democracy in the 1700s. Even faster than Germany did in the mid-20th Century. This is especially important when you consider just how much the Iraqi people have had to overcome. Taken into that light, it would seem that after 30 years of oppression by Saddam Hussein, no one in the world craves freedom and democracy more than the Iraqis.

Broken Angel

BROKEN ANGEL
Only a handful of writers get the Shocklines coveted, Good Read Guarantee. That means they offer a "money-back guarantee on certain books at certain times that you'll enjoy the fiction."

Right now, former feoamante.com reviewer, Brian Knight, has such a book: BROKEN ANGEL.

Check out a few chapters of BROKEN ANGEL in a pdf. Good luck finding it though. Brian didn't include it in his email and I can't find it in a perusal of his website! Brian! Grr!

Wassmore

Now for a total shift in gears, and not a happy one. Brian Knight is also helping Horror writer and past feoamante.com reviewer, Brian Keene get the word out on this one, Knight writes:

"As many of you already know, writer and family man James Sneddon (THE TOLLTAKER) passed away unexpectedly a few weeks ago. James was a fulltime writer without insurance, and left a wife and children in need.

Friend of the Sneddon family, Brian Keene, is accepting donations for the family. You can send checks or money orders, payable to Mary Sneddon, to:

Brian Keene
PO Box 15
Shrewsbury, PA 17361

This is a sad time for the Sneddon's, and nothing is going to change that, but we can do something to lighten the immediate financial burden his passing has caused."

As always, no pressure on anyone here. Do what you can, if you can.

The Cage

From Jason Brannon
LIVING IN A JASON CAGE

If crytozoology is your bag (a rarely used plot device brimming with modern Horror possibilities), then Jason Brannon is your man. His new novel, from Black death Books, THE CAGE, is out!

In the span of a few hours the zoo known as The Preserve will become a breeding ground for atrocity and bloodshed. The family trapped inside will forget all about their own inner turmoils and focus on fending off the cryptozoological monsters that a raging storm has let loose. The zoo has become much more than a zoo. It has become a cage, and humans are now the ones being held captive by Mother Nature and her bloodthirsty children.

Jason Brannon, who has been a member of the Horror writing community for many moons now, is offering a chapter from his tale at his Blog.

Visit him at jbrannon.com.

The Tower

From Simon Clark
HALLOWED CLARK

With Halloween creeping with wonderful eeriness toward us it's time for the horror writer's 'seasonal' update. The Halloween season, that is.

WHAT'S NEW?
THE TOWER is now out from Leisure. Just as the book collectors were predicting, the Robert Hale hardcover of my short story collection HOTEL MIDNIGHT is becoming increasingly scarce. In the current edition of MIDNIGHT STREET there's a free copy of a Simon Clark bibliography. Tony Mileman has turned detective to track down my fiction to create what must be the most comprehensive bibliography of my shorter works yet. It's beautifully produced with evocative artwork by Anna Hyskova. I must thank Tony publicly for his dedication in finding details about a number of stories that I though were lost in the mists of time. And thanks to Trevor Denyer for making it happen. For more information visit midnightstreet.co.uk.

She Loves Monsters

WHAT'S NEXT?
SHE LOVES MONSTERS is now at the pre-order stage at Necessary Evil Press. The book will include the novella SHE LOVES MONSTERS, MIDWORD and ONE, an experimental foray into autobiography. Foreword by screenwriter and author, Paul Finch; artwork by Caniglia. The novella involves the search for the legendary lost film of Vorada, which was made by actor/director Christopher Lake. Critics describe Lake as Lon Chaney, HP Lovecraft and Tod Browning rolled into one. The inspiration came from reading an article about lost films and TV episodes. I found I was asking myself the question: 'Were the films just misplaced, or were they suppressed for a reason?' Pre-orders and sight of Caniglia's haunting cover: necessaryevilpress.com.

And news of a new publisher: Severn House are to publish my new novel entitled LONDON UNDER MIDNIGHT. It's early days yet and I still don't have a publication date. The good news is that the English language edition will be published globally, so it will be easy to find around the world. Rumors that I might be collecting publishers like an avid numismatist collects coins is untrue of course... but then again, Leisure are ALSO publishing new titles, and watch out for more hardcovers from Robert Hale...

FINALLY, WHAT'S SOON?
Now this really is experimental. But I should have a surprise for all visitors to the website round about Halloween time. Whether it's a trick or treat will be for you to decide. Fade in sepulchral laughter, resonating into subterranean vaults....

Today BS

THE HORROR OF STUPIDITY - YET AGAIN
It never stops: the US media, with the freedom to report the facts, prefer to create news instead of report it. Like the entire "Bush staged the talks" - and by staged they meant scripted. That the event was phony is a bare-faced lie fabricated by AP reporter, Deb Riechmann. Unlike the old days when the US Media could say whatever they wanted because only they could give equal time to the people they smeared, the Internet has changed the imbalance. Blogs from the soldiers Bush spoke to prove that Deb is a liar. And the video that was suppose to defend the Associated Press (who have been caught numerous times this year alone, fraudulently creating non-existent news), instead, further debunked their story. Then NBC got caught when one of their reporters, Michelle Kosinski, was about to report her story while paddling a canoe down the street. But just as she came on live TV, two men walked past her, barely getting their toes wet! I so wish one of those guys had turned to her and jeered, BUSTED! Read it Here and check out the video! Hysterical! And listen as the Today show staff quickly disavow that they were about to pull a fraud.

BTW, the storm, of course, was Bush's fault.

All of 54 (and counting) movies of today's birthday girl, combined probably never made as much as the ultra low budget movie, SAW. Then again, combined, they probably didn't cost as much either. Happy Birthday to the queen of home VHS movie video lezzie Horror flicks (a niche market indeed!)
Actor Misty Mundae (TITANIC 2000, VAMPIRE STRANGLER, INTERNATIONAL NECKTIE STRANGLER, WITCHBABE: EROTICWITCH PROJECT 3, MY VAMPIRE LOVER, AN EROTIC VAMPIRE IN PARIS, SILK STOCKING STRANGLER, VAMPIRE VIXENS, LUST FOR DRACULA, and more) who is 26.
