OCTOBER OCT. 31 SAW II SWAG Wassmore! This past opening weekend, SAW II brought in more than 7.5 times what it took to make it, making SAW II profitable nearly four times over in just its first weekend! That's way over what far lesser fare like DOOM and THE FOG [2005] brought in. Very cool! Word is already out that Lion's Gate will make SAW III, so look for three severed fingers for next year. QUICK BITES The first centers on Dracula's castle in Transylvania. The second episode - entitled "Urban Legends II" -- will feature a visit to Lizzie Borden's house in Fall River, Massachusetts ... Lisa and Robert will be among the luckless souls wandering those haunted corridors. Tune in if you can and let Lisa and Robert know what you think.
HALLOWEEN GAG ORDER OLDER STORY Also available in print is Wicked Karnival #3 (Revamped), which includes my story "Lead Me Into Temptation," my piece on horror as literary element, and an in-depth interview, along with fiction, nonfiction, and art by a host of talented folks. WFC 2005 If all this isn't scary enough, I'll be attending the World Fantasy Convention in Madison, WI, next week (November 3-6), nestled between the shores of beautiful Lakes Mendota and Monona. My little corner of the programming is a panel on book reviewing: The Art of Review & Criticism Our panel of experts reviews the state of the "art" of fantasy review and criticism. Is there too much out there? Too little? Are reviews helping or harming the field? Where can a reader go for reliable reviews? And, of course, what practical things can a writer do to insure a fair review? William Gagliani, Paula Guran, Russell Letson, Michael Levy, Gary K. Wolfe. Of course, I'll also be signing at the autograph session Friday night, so come on up and say Hello if you're in the neighborhood! See for further World Fantasy Convention program information, schedules, rates, and so on. I hope we'll have a chance to meet there. I'll have a few copies of the first edition of my Stoker-nominated novel WOLF'S TRAP on hand, as well as a few anthologies in which I've had stories, and I'll be glad to sign them for you. NEW CONCERT PICS Steve Hackett and Genesis fans, watch for some NEW Steve Hackett Acoustic Trio live photos, coming soon to my website! From Robert S. Rhine Continued at Satan's 3-Ring Circus of Hell. OCT. 28

OCT. 25 RIP FOR ROSA Rosa Parks made a timid, quiet, peaceful statement in 1955, and it echoed across the US with the sound of a powerful thunder. She changed the rules for herself, her race, and all citizens of the United States, for the better. Such a simple act, such a powerful thunder. Thank you Rosa Parks.
From Weston Ochse Weston sez, This is the fun part. The galleys have been turned in. The cover art is done. All that's left is the unveiling. Back by popular demand, Scary Rednecks and Other Inbred Horrors will be reprinted as a special pre-order Delirium Hardcover only. To promote the return and the spectacular cover art by Chad Savage, we are hosting SEVEN DAYS OF THE SCARY REDNECK. Each day beginning October 24, 2005, we will unveil a small part of the cover, until the seventh day where it will be completely revealed, in all of its rednaked redneckery. Included will be a contest to win a free copy of the book. This starts tomorrow, so make sure you have the link and check back every day to see the cover as it is unveiled before your eyes, until finally, the Scary Redneck is revealed.
TRUE HORROR The hell? I don't have dreams of patting deadly snakes on the head. Nightmares maybe. But dreams? I've dreamed of being rich and dreamed of naked fun with a wide variety of Playboy centerfolds and certain singers and actresses - but I just never gave a damn for petting a deadly king cobra on the noggin. Or, for that matter, tickling grizzlies or flossing Great Whites. No appeal there at all. Now no doubt, if Austin and I ever met, we could find some kind of common ground. Our fondness for martial arts, photography, writing, and perhaps hammering down a brew or two. But when he breathlessly announced that giving a king cobra a pitty pat on its angry melon was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, I wrote him right off. Which got me to thinking: when people from different cultures simply hear of the other's fondest wishes - do they immediately think "I could never understand this guy's life!"? I ask because sometimes you wonder why there are so many problems in the world, and other times you wonder if you are part of the problem. In the realm of Horror writing, perhaps its something for a character to consider. 'Am I part of the problem?' And if so, what problem? HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO - When it comes to Horror in modern cinema, it's hard to ignore the woman who has been the green light to so many writers and directors. Happy Birthday to Producer Gale Ann Hurd (THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS, ALIEN NATION, THE ABYSS, TREMORS, TERMINATOR 2, CAST A DEADLY SPELL, THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS, THE RELIC, DANTE'S PEAK, VIRUS, HULK, TERMINATOR 3 and more!) who is 50 today.
OCT. 24 I WANT TO PLAY A GAME The rules of the contest are simple. Check out the review of the movie SAW II. There's a lot of swag, so there will be a lot of winners. I've provided you with the directions, now all you have to do is follow the rules. The names of the winners will be posted with the review. As for the losers, well, nobody will ever hear from them. Let the game begin. SATAN AND THE GOLDEN APPLE Golden Apple is located at at: There will be many of the artists in attendance as well as some other surprises. Make no mistake, this signing is huge. Here's who's confirmed for the signing event: Go to SATAN'S 3-RING CIRCUS OF HELL. From Edo van Belkom The Silver Birch is one of several "Tree" awards in an Ontario-wide program of which over 200,000 readers participated last year. The Forest of Reading Program is an initiative of the Ontario Library Association which encourages the best in Canadian writing, Canadian authors, and the enjoyment of reading. Between October 2005 and June 2006 students from across Ontario will read nominated books and vote for their favorites, with the winners in each category presented their awards at a ceremony at Harbourfront in Toronto next year. The Forest of Reading categories include: Blue Spruce (Picture Books); Silver Birch (Grades 4-6); Red Maple (Grades 6-9); and White Pine (Grades 10-12). "I'm ecstatic," said van Belkom. "Award attention is always nice, but the Silver Birch means that countless students from all across Ontario will be reading my book, and for a writer that's reward enough by itself." This is the second award nod for WOLF PACK which was honored in July 2005 with the Aurora Award, Canada's top prize for speculative writing. It was the third Aurora win for van Belkom, who has also won a Stoker Award presented by the Horror Writers Association. WOLF PACK was published in October 2004 by Tundra Books. A sequel, LONE WOLF was published in October 2005. Edo van Belkom's two previous works for young readers are the anthologies BE AFRAID! (A CLA Young Adult Book of the Year Finalist) and BE VERY AFRAID! (An Aurora Award winner). From Nanci Kalanta ANNE FINDS GOD - RIGHT WHERE SHE LEFT HIM CPM IS FIRST ANIME COMPANY TO PROVIDE VIDEO PROGRAMMING FOR IPOD "Releasing episodes and trailers for the iPod is only natural for Central Park Media. CPM has always been the pre-eminent innovator in the anime world," said Newton Grant, CPM's Director of Business Development. "We were the first to release anime on CD-ROM, DVD, and PSP downloads, and the first to offer manga and manhwa as Digi-press downloads, so now the iPod is perfectly natural for us." Central Park Media currently offers downloadable content for the Sony PSP at CPM/PSP and has entire volumes of manga and manhwa online at CPM/Digipress. Peter Tatara, CPM's fan community liaison executive, added, "It is a well-known fact that anime fans are the earliest adopters of new technology hardware and software. We are sure that they will quickly become a major customer base for video iPods, so we want to ensure that they can enjoy their favorite CPM titles on this new device.” While CPM's iPod video programs are available only at the CPM website at this time, the company expects to make its programming available at the Apple iTunes website once negotiations are completed. No schedule for launching on iTunes has been announced at this time. THE PEOPLE'S METAL- I MEAN, AGGRO! MIND RIPPER II is the second in a compilation series which contains songs from the Van Richter Records (why the hell do new music companies keep using the "records" moniker in their names? Buncha old farts!) catalogue titles VR1010-1022. Featured artists include TESTIFY, THE FAIR SEX, PLASTIC NOISE EXPERIENCE, SIELWOLF, DEATH & HORROR Inc and GIRLS UNDER GLASS. The Fair Sex, contribute with two track off the double retrospective CD "The Dark Ages". Heavyweight Gothic pioneers Girls Under Glass add one track each off the "Nightmares" and "Frozen" CDs. Testify, contribute a remix off "Crack the Mind" mixed by the seminal band "Die Warzau", and a track off their latest release "Triviality Beyond Acceptance". Plastic Noise Experience add two tracks from their latest and last record "Noised" as a duo, and one unreleased track. Toronto Canada's Darkwave Industrial Death & Horror Inc add two tracks off the sought after release "Transmissions from the Chemical Land". Sielwolf, contribute two tracks off the "Nachtstrom" and "Magnum Force" releases. Not bad for a company that started out at Georgia Tech University (Go Yellowjackets!). Anyway, this compilation is a great introduction and representation of the Aggro, Electro, Darkwave and Experimental sub genres of Industrial music - at least, Van Richter Records would like you to think so. HAPPY HORROR

OH! AND HE LOOKED GOTHIC! The cowardly beating death of Pamela Vitale (wife of lawyer and TV legal pundit Daniel Horowitz) has coughed up a suspect. Police have found their likely suspect in the form of one 16 year old youth. What does the media know about him so far? Well, Michelle Locke, of the (Ugh!) Associated Press , apparently hung out at the suspect's high school, telling everyone the suspect's name, (he's under age and he hasn't even been charged yet - and Locke is telling his classmates his name! Nice!) and asking if anyone would like to be in newspapers telling the nation what they knew about the suspect. FoxNews.com and ABCNews.com are running with the Associated Press story. On TeeVee, NBC reporters went into detail about the suspect, saying that, among the other things the cowardly murderer did, was to carve a "Gothic symbol" into the back of Vitale. Which is a bare-faced LIE! According to the police and other news sources, some sick shit carved a cross into Pamela's back. A cross is a Christian symbol, people. Not Satanism, not Gothic, not even Islamic. It's a Christian symbol. Look for the Christian who abuses women and you've found your murderer (yes, I know that's a specious statement - savor the irony). CBS News used some of the Associated Press story, and did their own investigating, delivering a rather more factual report -minus all the shrill anti-goth handwringing in Locke's story. Understand that this is not a slight against the police who are investigating Pamela's murder. In fact, they've gone on record as saying that they are still investigating. This is a slam on Fox News, NBC News, and anyone else who tries to skew this as a "Eeek! Beware of teens in black clothes!" alert. Already Marilyn Manson's name is being bandied about, even though there is nothing to suggest that the suspect even listens to MM. This is reminiscent of the Columbine murders as well, because the Media woo-wooed about Marilyn Manson in that one too, even though the Columbine murderers were also white supremacists and would've never listened to MM, who is Jewish. I've wrote about a number of Associated Press stories this year. And how many of them caused real damage because of their "inventive" reporting. At this point, AP is fast becoming the Weekly World News of information.

OCT. 17 BROKEN ANGEL Right now, former feoamante.com reviewer, Brian Knight, has such a book: BROKEN ANGEL. Check out a few chapters of BROKEN ANGEL in a pdf. Good luck finding it though. Brian didn't include it in his email and I can't find it in a perusal of his website! Brian! Grr! Wassmore Now for a total shift in gears, and not a happy one. Brian Knight is also helping Horror writer and past feoamante.com reviewer, Brian Keene get the word out on this one, Knight writes: "As many of you already know, writer and family man James Sneddon (THE TOLLTAKER) passed away unexpectedly a few weeks ago. James was a fulltime writer without insurance, and left a wife and children in need. Friend of the Sneddon family, Brian Keene, is accepting donations for the family. You can send checks or money orders, payable to Mary Sneddon, to: Brian Keene This is a sad time for the Sneddon's, and nothing is going to change that, but we can do something to lighten the immediate financial burden his passing has caused." As always, no pressure on anyone here. Do what you can, if you can. From Jason Brannon In the span of a few hours the zoo known as The Preserve will become a breeding ground for atrocity and bloodshed. The family trapped inside will forget all about their own inner turmoils and focus on fending off the cryptozoological monsters that a raging storm has let loose. The zoo has become much more than a zoo. It has become a cage, and humans are now the ones being held captive by Mother Nature and her bloodthirsty children. Jason Brannon, who has been a member of the Horror writing community for many moons now, is offering a chapter from his tale at his Blog. Visit him at jbrannon.com. From Simon Clark WHAT'S NEW? WHAT'S NEXT? And news of a new publisher: Severn House are to publish my new novel entitled LONDON UNDER MIDNIGHT. It's early days yet and I still don't have a publication date. The good news is that the English language edition will be published globally, so it will be easy to find around the world. Rumors that I might be collecting publishers like an avid numismatist collects coins is untrue of course... but then again, Leisure are ALSO publishing new titles, and watch out for more hardcovers from Robert Hale... FINALLY, WHAT'S SOON?
