DARK HORSE TO ADAPT "REIGN OF FIRE," 3 MORE

Back in the '50's, when comics were actually read by real people, not just socially retarded misanthropes like you and me, one of the hottest genres was adaptations of movies and TV shows. Dark Horse Comics aims to bring back those days by producing comics based on four recent films.

CRIMINY!
Horror writer/editor Brett Savory and Horror poet/editor Sandra Katsuri got married, Saturday, August 10! And all this time I thought they were already married! But NO! They were living in SIN! I can only guess that sin, like all things, got tiresome after a while, so they tied the knot. Congratulations to some of my favorite Canadians!

QUAKECON 2002
When it comes to Horror games, Idgames wrote the book. I remember way back with the first DOOM and old DOS computers. I saw people play that game, hear the roar of a Baron Of Hell, and go leaping out of their chairs. For the first time I understood how audiences must have felt back in the days of silent black and white movies, when they saw that train rushing toward them and they ran from the theater.

So now is your chance to relive all that is Idgames and compete for the chance to win $100,000!

GETTING GOSSAMER
Horror writers Mark McLaughlin, Rain Graves, and David Niall Wilson have come together to produce a book of poetry and some fiction in THE GOSSAMER EYE. For those of you pretty much fed up with the whiney self-absorbed sniveling and the overwrought soap opera dramatics of most horror poetry, be aware that, according to Mark, the three authors "... prove that the poetry of the imagination can be much more than just the silken, sad rustling of purple curtains. (We) explore many new avenues of expression - with wit, humor, anger, and always, passion."

AND THE GOOD NEWS IS...
9 miners in Pennsylvania get trapped over 100 feet beneath the surface of the earth, day after day passes, but in the end, 9 went in and 9 came out.

Amtrak train goes off the rails in Maryland, injuring many, but all passengers survive.

Ain't a thing you can do about the catastrophes and accidents in the world, but, outside of fiction, I love a happy ending.

You don't? Then this news item is for you: There is a lump of rock heading toward our planet that is a mile and a half long. It could arrive as early as 2019. If it hits it will virtually wipe out all human life. NASA mathematicians, the same people who repeatedly got the math wrong on various Mars landers and kept missing THE ENTIRE FREAKING PLANET or crashing the landers on the surface, claim that odds are good the rock WON'T hit us. There now, happy? Who wouldn't be?

THE HORROR OF HIDEOUS
Now if you want the hideous Horror of everyday life and all of its cruelties, I suggest you run to rotten.com. The photos they have there of humanity's inhumanity is hellishly obscene. Still, people only get really offended when they see nipple, bush, or willie.

But since we are on the internet, let's talk about internet sites. I've looked through a LOT of Horror, Thriller, Mystery, and Suspense sites to list them for you here in the column to the left. What I feel are the top. And even the worst took care to be designed as well as the limited talent of the designer would allow. None of them are actually repulsive. So what are the ugliest, most hideously designed sites I've ever seen in my life?

NASSISE GETS HORROR IN HIS POCKET
As if having his first novel, RIVERWATCH, receive accolades and award nominations (It's the Stoker this week he's vying for!), author Joe Nassise announced that he's signed a two book contract with Pocket Books in New York. Pocket, a division of Simon & Schuster, intends to release a mass market edition of RIVERWATCH by spring 2003. Additionally, Pocket Books will also be publishing a mass market version of HERETIC, the first book in Nassise's new Templar Chronicles series.

DAVIS OFFERS SUGAR AND SPLICE GIRLS

The authentic voice of Scottish crime novelist Carol Anne Davis comes no doubt because she holds a Master's Degree in criminology. Rather than offer her hand at a spinning a yarn, Davis' latest effort, WOMEN WHO KILL, takes a walk on the nonfiction side as she allows the reader to explore the lives of fourteen murderers: all women.

Stacy Layne Wilson was fortunate enough to attend the Mario Brava Festival and posted this report at her site (Psst... there are pictures, reviews, AND a video!) staciwilson.com (Stop drooling, Feo!)

REMINDERS FROM BEELZEBUB!
Let's start the new month with a couple of reminders: This Saturday, June 8, the Horror Writers Association will be handing out the Bram Stoker Awards honoring fiction published or presented in 2001. Toastmaster Douglas Clegg will be among the many larger names (Peter Straub and Jack Ketchum, too!) in the horror genre gathering at the New York Helmsley Hotel for an entire weekend of workshops, panels, readings, signings, and the awards. John Faris is being honored with the HWA Lifetime Achievement Award, but late word is that Harlan Ellison won't be there. This will be a great place to get some books signed, so if you live in the New York area... Well, you know the drill.

BITS OF HELL
There's a great convergence about to happen! June 7 & 8, 2002, in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, NY, the Global Halloween Alliance will be lighting their jack-o'-lanterns in unison at the Tarrytown Hilton as they celebrate the fourth Global Halloween Convergence. The only celebrity involved is the holiday itself, but the two-day event is stuffed with lots and lots of planned activities including a "Hauntolympics," costume party, Scary Charity auction, and the Feast of Halloween No Talent Show! Need more information? Check out the website and be prepared to pay through the jagged smile for admission: halloweenalliance.com.
