Alien RaidersCHRONICLE - 2012
USA Release: Feb. 3, 2012
Davis Entertainment, Dune Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox
Rating: USA: R

Childhood friends and cousins, Andrew (Dane DeHaan: TRUE BLOOD [TV], METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, A CURE FOR WELLNESS, VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS) and Matt (Alex Russell: WASTED ON THE YOUNG, BAIT, THE HOST [2013], CARRIE [2013], CUT SNAKE, BLOOD IN THE WATER, RABBIT) are in Highschool and, what often happens in Highschool and burgeoning adulthood is, one friend is stuck in a rut, spinning their wheels while another moves forward, upward, onward.

Andrew is shy and introverted while Matt has found a talent in athletics and is eager to pursue that. One of these personality traits propels you into popularity while the other buries you in obscurity.

In highschool, your peers are hungry to do both. If you cannot claw your way to alpha, the mob will oppress you down even and especially if it kills you.

Being introverted may have many reasons but in Andrew's case his Mom (Bo Peterson: THE BONE SNATCHER, THE LOST FUTURE) is dying and his father (Micheal Kelly: UNBREAKABLE, DAWN OF THE DEAD [2004], TOOTH AND NAIL, LEVEL 9, DEFENDOR, THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU, VIRAL, TABOO [TV]) is an alcoholic bully.

Speaking of High School, Steve (Michael B. Jordan: FAHRENHEIT 451, KIN, GEN: LOCK [TV]) is running for class president and sees potential in the fast rising Matt and wants to get him onboard, be his friend. That means Andrew is along for the ride and Steve tries to figure out how to make the best of that situation. When Steve realizes that the insular Andrew is a wiz with the video camera, he sees potential there for his own ambitions. Thus a friendship between the three is born.

Good friends being what they are, everyone wants to lift each other up to the group's full potential, as long as your friends are agreeable. If someone wants to bring the group down to their level then either they're out, or the group becomes weak.

Matt and Steve want and need Andrew to rise and he's more than willing. This culminates in a variety of ways, testing one's physical and intellectual boundaries, exploring their surroundings of their little home town environment, and discovering a mysterious hole in the ground. With an enthusiastic spirit of Dare and adventure, entering this cave leads them to something that glows and that leads to unconsciousness.

When they all come to they're back out of the hole, not knowing how they escaped. Over the next few days however, its clear that they've changed. They have a modicum of super powers. Not much, just a little bit.

This is now their secret though individually and together they practice to control and develop these new powers. The more they learn about what they can do, they more they are able to do, amazing themselves in all of the exhilirating ways that such powers would bring.

This is where the problems arise. Even before their powers, Matt and Steve were self-confident and self-realized enough, to handle their miniscule normal human prowess before the change.

Andrew on the other hand, is through with being bullied.

Where the story goes from here is why Director and co-writer Josh Trank, along with co-writer Max Landis (DEER WOMAN, VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN), have a movie worth watching and you should!

This is why I'm saying so little about it. CHRONICLE is a movie worth exploring and I keep coming back to it.
