WISHES TO CHARLES GRANT From Tempe Video AFTER
15 YEARS OF FAN DEMAND Tempe Entertainment today announced that their 1990 flagship underground film THE DEAD NEXT DOOR has been acquired by home video titan Anchor Bay Entertainment for release as a Special Edition DVD to mark the films 20th anniversary in 2005. Admittedly the largest and most expensive Super-8mm feature film ever made, this fully-restored edition will be released to home video in the U.S. & Canada as well as the United Kingdom. THE DEAD NEXT DOOR began life during a chance meeting in mid-1985 with a legendary Detroit, Michigan-based cult director known only as The Master Cylinder who encouraged 19-year-old J.R. Bookwalter to get his own feature rolling after seeing the young directors short films. The Master Cylinder even put his money where his mouth was and thus began a 5-year odyssey for first-time feature filmmaker Bookwalter, who shot the epic-scale film in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. The low-budget horror film quickly became legendary in northeast Ohio during the summer of 1986 as more than 1,500 area residents of all ages came out to play zombies with massive coverage from the local media. Soon the mysterious identity of the films executive producer sparked the interest of leading horror movie magazine FANGORIA, who did an exhaustive feature in their March, 1987 issue a full 3 years before the films initial home video release on the obscure Electro Video label. Bookwalters Tempe took over the films distribution in 1992, where it eventually got worldwide exposure in Germany, Japan, Spain, the U.K. and other countries. Despite the films spotty distribution over the last 15 years, THE DEAD NEXT DOOR has found a loyal and steadily-growing fan base worldwide that has allowed Bookwalter to keep making films, including the cult hit OZONE in 1994 and more recently the critically-acclaimed WITCHOUSE 2: BLOOD COVEN and WITCHOUSE 3: DEMON FIRE for Full Moon Pictures. The screenplay for a proposed sequel called DEAD FUTURE: THE DEAD NEXT DOOR has been circulating waiting for the right deal and there is even a video game in development based on the original DEAD. "Its hard to escape the shadow of your first film, especially one with such a bizarre history, Bookwalter explains. Thats the one people wind up remembering you for, and over the years Ive repeatedly been asked two questions When are you making the sequel?, and more recently, When are you releasing a Special Edition DVD of THE DEAD NEXT DOOR? Thanks to Anchor Bays Michael R. Felsher, at least half of the fans prayers have finally been answered. This is going to be a fantastic project to work on, Felsher says. Having been a longtime fan of this zombie epic, it's going to be a real treat to see it restored and exposed to a whole new audience of living dead fanatics. Bookwalter is also thrilled with the new partnership. I have been a huge DVD collector right from its launch in 1997, and Anchor Bay has become the preeminent distributor of classic horror films. Theyre the best at what they do, and I have used them as a template for my own Tempe DVD releases. To have the same company that has restored such classics as DAWN OF THE DEAD, THE EVIL DEAD and HALLOWEEN behind our little flick is an honor. To that end, Bookwalter is personally supervising an extensive remastering of THE DEAD NEXT DOOR from the original Super-8mm film elements, complete with a 5.1 surround remix and a long list of all-new extras documenting the films 20-year history. This will be what I like to call the proper burial of this film, Bookwalter laughs. When this work is finished, all that will be left to do is to answer the fans other question and get that sequel made at long last. Anchor Bay expects the feature-packed DEAD NEXT DOOR Special Edition DVD to arrive during the first quarter of 2005 at a collectible price. For updates on the progress of the remastering and release, stay tuned to the films official website at deadnextdoor.com.
MARCH 18 HAPPY
HORROR BIRTHDAY TO - From Jeff Gelb HOT BLOOD STILL SPILLING LOS ANGELES, CA - HOT BLOOD: Strange Bedfellows, volume twelve of the continuing erotic horror Hot Blood series, is set for November 2004 publication, announces co-editors Jeff Gelb and Michael Garrett. "Our authors continue to amaze us," states Gelb and Garrett. "Just when we think all ideas combining sex and horror have been exhausted, our contributors manage to come up with some great new stuff." The series began in 1989 with Pocket Books. Following completion of ten volumes, Kensington Publishing Co. took over and is reprinting nine of the first ten volumes beginning later this year. Will more new volumes follow? "We certainly hope so," say the co-editors. "We, as well as the series' fans, are anxious to see what our writers can come up with next." Contributors to HOT BLOOD: Strange Bedfellows include Greg Kihn, Dave Zeltserman, Michael Bracken, Catherine Dain, Christa Faust, Marv Wolfman, Michael Laimo, Stephen Gresham, Del Howison, Elle Frazier, Abbie Bernstein, Dana Soloman, J. F. Gonzalez, Graham Masterton, Lonn Friend, Alan Ormsby and Ilsa J. Bick.
MARCH 15 DEATH
IN THE FAMILY HORROR For myself and the contributors for feoamante.com, our best wishes go to the family and friends of Dee Willis. All fans of Horror should know that this woman was valuable to us all and will be missed. Unfortunately, there is more illness news for some of the folks in Horror. I choose to keep a positive outlook by not adding their names here. HAPPY HORROR BIRTHDAYS TO - Director Renny Harlan (A NIGHTMARE ON ELMSTREET 4, DIE HARD 2, DEEP BLUE SEA, MINDHUNTERS) is 45. Director David Cronenberg (SHIVERS, RABID, THE BROOD, SCANNERS, VIDEODROME, THE FLY, DEAD RINGERS, eXistenZ) is 61. HILTON DOES HORROR Before you label Paris Hilton a complete buffoon, understand the mental rigor of her ongoing balancing act: Pretending shock and dismay of having a homemade porn video of her circulate just in time for her debut on nationwide television. Being clueless, snobbish, and utterly stupid on television was a great act. So much so that now she's going into film acting! Joel Silver, hot off of his eroding success with THE MATRIX series, is upping his game by getting together with Robert Zemeckis (DEATH BECOMES HER, DEMON KNIGHT, THE FRIGHTENERS, HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, WHAT LIES BENEATH, TH13RTEEN GHOSTS, GHOST SHIP, GOTHIKA) to do a remake of the twice remade Horror movie, HOUSE OF WAX. This time though, instead of having a wax museum, the plot will have the totally original idea of plopping Paris Hilton in with a group of her peers (Ha! It's funny already!), wind up in a rural area, and get chased around by a murderous psychopath or two. At least with Zemeckis on the project, even if the film should crash and burn, nobody attached to it will blame it on the recurring "Death of Horror". DARK DELICACIES - THE BOOK! Del Howison, owner of the Burbank, California store Dark Delicacies, has just signed a contract with book publisher Carroll & Graf to edit a horror anthology book under the store's name and trademark. Dark Delicacies is the only all-horror book and gift store in the United States. They are well known for their signings with authors, director, actors, etc. from the world of horror. Del has co-edited three charity books with his wife Sue Howison for Dark Delicacies, including last year's Framed, which is on the initial ballot of this year's Bram Stoker Awards. Clive Barker (creator of HELLRAISER), Brian Lumley (creator of the Necroscope series) are currently scheduled to be part of the books line-up. Mr. Howison will be co-editing the book with Jeff Gelb, author and editor of twenty books including the HOT BLOOD series (which is currently up to twelve volumes). This inaugral Dark Delicacies anthology is, what the editors are projecting to be, the first of a continuing series. The book is scheduled to be released for Halloween 2005. MARCH 12 It's that time of year again. Time for the Horror conventions around the world to be making their presence known. Whether the conventions are strictly Horror or deal with larger themes that incorporate Horror (Comic conventions, Fantasy, Sci-Fi), the time has returned at last. MARCH 9 SHADOW
MUSIC RETURNS FROM THE DEAD! I
don't anticipate Shadow Music being all that different from the time when
Feo and I were doing the lion's share of the content. I will try to regularly
update the page with worthy news items from the dark music world. I'll
be contributing reviews once again. And yes, there will be more praise
than bloodshed since the majority of my selections will come from my own
music collection. You never know, though; a trusted band might drop the
ball. I won't limit the reviews to cds. There are LPs, demos, and music
DVDs which deserve some attention. I also hope to provide more interviews
- more relevant ones than the December Wolves and Krieg interviews which
should be appearing on the site in the near future. The bands took the
time to respond to them and they deserve to be seen and heard. My apologies
to Brian O'Blivion, Smails, and Lord Imperial for the absurd wait. The
Imperial interview does at least come in time for the release of the Krieg
full-length The Black House, due March 10 on Red
Stream. READ THE KRIEG INTERVIEW FEARLESS
TALES GENRE FEST REVEALS FESTIVAL TRAILER - ARE YOU FEARLESS? Fearless Tales Genre Fest, the Bay Area's only open submission, genre-based film festival, has unveiled the festival trailer viewable only at its website. The film festival will present 19 feature films and 25 short films highlighting the best in independent horror, sci-fi, fantasy and noir from March 11-14, 2004 at the Victoria Theatre (2961 16th Street) in San Francisco.
MARCH 8 From Weston
Ochse To give you an idea of the novel: SCARECROW GODS is the story of a cult leader; a possessed rocket scientist who speaks in rhyme, palindromes, and anagram; a Roman Catholic monk with doubts about the divine; a savagely-crippled Vietnam vet with the ability to travel out of body in order to escape his own pain; and a young boy who only wants his family to be the way it was before his sister ran away. From the battlefields of Desert Storm, to the highest temples in the Himalayas, to a lonely Mexican Border town, to the dusky Southern city of Chattanooga, to the high desert town of Sierra Vista, this novel crosses all borders and languages. At 120k, the novel is long enough to encompass everyone's story. While waiting
for the novel, check out these excerpts.
