THEY ARE
KILLING SHAUN OF THE DEAD
I watched EXORCIST IV over
the weekend and got to see the U.S. trailer for SHAUN
OF THE DEAD. The audience was silent throughout the trailer and not
in a good way. The trailer, released by Universal Pictures SOOOO SUCKED!
Punch lines without context delivered with no set-up and long shots of
some of the funniest moments that, without knowing a fast "why?"
of what's going on, look stupid and insipid.
SHAUN
OF THE DEAD is both funny and smart in a way that very few movies
are. Now I'm not one of those burdened with the adolescent sneer of "Anything
out of Hollywood is crap!" because that's just absurd. But I will
say that whoever made and approved of this trailer hasn't got a clue on
what they have or how to promote it. Damn shame! If you want to see a
fun, rocking trailer on SHAUN OF THE DEAD, check out the following link.

turn right and click on the TV. Watch the original trailer first. The
new trailer isn't near as good but its not as bad as the theatrical trailer

MORBID
AWARDS
MORBID
CURIOSITY Magazine, an annual publication, is unlike any other horror
magazine because the stories inside are true experiences that happened
directly to the authors who wrote them. Good thing MC is only an annual
publication. Once a year reading erodes your jaded thick skin and restores
your human empathy. More than that and you'd probably want to kill yourself.
The mag is not for the faint-hearted, but the San Francisco Bay Guardian
just voted it Best
Nightmare-Inducing Local Magazine.
Upcoming
event:
Morbid Curiosity

On Monday, August 23, 8:30 p.m., contributors to Morbid Curiosity magazine

Allegra Lundyworf hallucinates on legal over-the-counter drugs
Claudius Reich survives a terrorist bombing
Jill Tracy begins her morbid career in music
Geoff Walker is out of prison and ready to testify

HORRORFIND
DRAMATIC READING ATTACK!
You may remember an earlier news story about Cullen Bunn and Matthew
Warner doing a joint dramatic reading at this year's HORRORFIND IV
in Baltimore, Maryland. It seems Matt got a little carried away with his
reading, at one point screaminig at the top of his lungs. Which terrified
outside passerby into thinking that two Horror writers were fighting,
which, in turn got security running to the room, clubs at the ready.
No one was
arrested but the questions remain. If that's what happened at the dramatic
reading, what went on at the dramatic signing?

THE REAL
SCARY CANUK
Edo
van Belkom's mass-market horror novel SCREAM QUEEN has been optioned for
film by producer/director Jamie Schutz and his company Real Scary Films.
SCREAM QUEEN
is a novel about a reality television show where six contestants agree
to spend a night in a haunted house outfitted with countless cameras and
fear-inducing special effects. The winning scream queen - voted on by
a television audiences - will win $50,000 and the starring role in the
next Gowan Brothers horror feature. But, the house they're in is actually
haunted, and when things start to go horribly wrong, who can tell what's
real and what's just so much movie magic?
As a producer
and director, Schutz has the right pedigree to translate SCREAM QUEEN
onto the screen. He was a co-producer of the 2003 reality movie, THE REAL
CANCUN, and has worked as an assistant director on approximately 10 feature
films throughout the US. He has served as an assistant director on over
20 music videos and as co-ordinating director on several reality shows.
Schutz was an assistant director on "Eco-Challenge: Borneo"
for USA Networks before moving on to become supervising producer on the
first two seasons of "Survivor" for CBS and "Lost in the
USA" for WB.
Edo van Belkom
is the Bram Stoker and Aurora Award-winning author of more than 20 books
and 200 stories who noted horror journalist Stanley Wiater has called
"A one man factory of fear." His books include the novels TEETH,
MARTYRS and BLOOD ROAD, the collections DEATH DRIVES A SEMI and SIX-INCH
SPIKES, and the how-to manual WRITING HORROR. Edo also pens the serial
story "Mark Dalton: Owner/Operator" which has been published
monthly in the industry trade magazine TRUCK NEWS since June 1999, as
well as a new monthly column on writing for the acclaimed horror publication

AT THE HORRORFIND IV
FeoNote: About two weeks ago, my wife and I were tooling down the
Highway, at the legal speed limit, when our left rear tire blew out. We're
okay but the cost of getting a new tire and alloy wheel chewed up the
money put aside for attending this year's Horrorfind Convention in Baltimore,
MD.
Here are just a few people who will show up:
Horror writers Mathew Warner (THE
ORGAN DONOR) and Cullen Bunn will perform a Dramatic reading and booksigning
in Salon F of the Hunt Valley Marriott in Hunt Valley, MD (near
Baltimore). This should be pretty interesting folks. I've seen
dramatic readings before, but never a dramatic booksigning. It takes place
this Friday at 5:30 p.m. as part of Horrorfind
Weekend IV. Convention guests include George Romero, Ken
Foree, and the cast of the classic zombie movie DAWN
OF THE DEAD with a special rare appearance by Gaylen Ross.
Matt will
also be signing books 3 p.m. Saturday with the Mid-Atlantic Horror Professionals
in the dealer's room. But without the drama.

H.E.'S SO SPECIAL!
The WHC committee is pleased to announce that Harlan Ellison has been confirmed
as a Very Special Guest of Honor for the 15th Annual World Horror Convention
being held in New York City. Ellison is one of the most prolific and revered
writers of our day with his work spanning the publishing, television and
film industries.
Harlan Ellison
was recently characterized by The New York Times Book Review as having
"the spellbinding quality of a great nonstop talker, with a cultural
warehouse for a mind." The Los Angeles Times suggested, "It's
long past time for Harlan Ellison to be awarded the title: 20th century
Lewis Carroll." And the Washington Post Book World said simply, "One
of the great living American short story writers."
He has written
or edited 75 books; more than 1700 stories, essays, articles, and newspaper
columns; two dozen teleplays, for which he received the Writers Guild
of America most outstanding teleplay award
for solo work an unprecedented four times; and a dozen movies. He won
the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Allan Poe award twice, the Horror
Writers Association Bram Stoker award six times (including
The
Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996), the Nebula three times, the
Hugo 2 times, and received the Silver Pen for Journalism from P.E.N. Not
to mention The World Fantasy Award, the British Fantasy Award, the American
Mystery Award, two Audie Awards, the Ray Bradbury Award, and a Grammy
nomination for Spoken Word recordings.
The World
Horror Convention, the premiere event for all things darkly imaginative,
will be held April 7th-10th, 2005 in New York City at the Park Central
Hotel. This year's Guests of Honor include legendary authors Harlan Ellison,
Jack Ketchum and Joe R. Lansdale among many others. For more information

CHERNOBYL, Ukraine
You might have thought that Chernobyl was off-limits, closed to the outside
world behind a rigidly patrolled exclusion zone since reactor No. 4 went
into catastrophic meltdown April 26, 1986, spewing radiation to the four
winds.
Not a bit
of it. The reactor's deadly core was buried in a concrete and steel sarcophagus,
but the adjoining reactors carried on producing electricity until they
were finally decommissioned a couple of years ago.
Now, for
the first time, a Hollywood feature film -- the zombie movie RETURN OF
THE LIVING DEAD 4: Necropolis - has gained access to the infamous site.

NORWEGIAN CHURCH DRAWS BLACK METAL FANS
Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten is reporting that the restored stave church
in Fantoft in Bergen, Norway has become a pilgrimage site for European
black metal music fans who want to visit the site of the church-burning
that Varg Vikernes (aka Count Grishnack)
of the one-man band BURZUM was suspected of carrying out.
On the cover
of the BURZUM EP album "Aske" (Ashes) one can see a 1992 picture
of the charred ruins of Fantoft stave church. Varg Vikernes is serving
a sentence for murder and church burnings.
Guide Arne
Dyroy is not terribly thrilled about some of the new tourists to Fantoft.
"The church has
received unwelcome attention because of the 1992 fire and we have had
visitors wearing T-shirts with pictures of the burnt ruins. This is very
disrespectful," Dyroy said.
Torgrim Oyre,
music reviewer and assistant organizer of the annual Bergen metal festival
Hole in the Sky, believes the pilgrimage is a phenomenon limited to "slightly
nerdy" foreigners.

HAPPENING

From Michael

PLAYING DEAD
August 4th Raw Dog Screaming Press has reached an agreement with award-winning
author Michael A. Arnzen (FREAKCIDENTS)
to release PLAY DEAD, his first horror novel in a decade. This gritty
gambling tale set in Las Vegas is also a carefully constructed "novel-of-cards"
with 52 chapters, one for each card in a deck, plus a joker chapter. The
fast-paced story involves a group of homeless gamblers who are playing
a deadly game of poker...with photographs of their murder victims. Originally
conceived as Arnzen's Master's thesis at the University of Idaho, PLAY
DEAD will be released exclusively in hardcover in the spring of 2005.
RDSP plans
to sponsor a series of poker tournaments to promote the book at cities
and conferences around the country, including the World Horror Convention
and the Horror Writer's Association Convention.
In addition to a hardcover run, PLAY DEAD will also be released in a limited
special edition as the second title in RDSP's highly collectable and unusual
"Grim Grimoire Bloodline" series. These special editions feature
handmade three dimensional covers sculpted from resin by horror prop artisans
Z Malice & Co. The first book in the series, Jeffrey Thomas' novel
Everybody Scream!, created a huge stir in the book collecting community
when it was announced in June '04, selling out on pre-order in about 36
hours. The PLAY DEAD special edition will not be numbered or lettered.
Instead each book will be matched with a custom-designed playing card
signed by the author. The special edition will be
limited to two decks, each including a joker, for a total of 106 copies.
It will also come with a pack of custom illustrated poker cards and a
stand for displaying this very unique book.
Michael Arnzen's first novel, Grave Markings, won both the Bram Stoker
Award and the International Horror Guild Award. He was awarded a second
Stoker in 2004 for his unusual online newsletter The Goreletter. He is
a pioneer in the horror poetry and flash fiction genres, with several
poetry chapbooks to his name (many of which were
also Stoker nominated) and a collection of one hundred
dark "micro fictions" entitled 100 Jolts: Shockingly Short Stories.
For more information on this author, visit his popular website, gorelets.com.

FROM THE
BACK OF THE BOOK:
Johnny had been to the top. Young and slick, he knew how to play the high
roller, dress the part, and make his opponents sweat. He'd ridden into
Vegas on a winning streak a mile wide. But Vegas took everything, even
his lucky gold tooth.
You'd think he couldn't fall any lower than a homeless shelter full of
the downtrodden. And he couldn't possibly have anything left to lose.
But you'd be wrong.
Johnny soon discovers there's a game going on at the shelter. A game where
before you play the cards you have to make them. A game where the payout
is survival and folding means death. A game where the question becomes:
are you playing the cards or are they playing you?
Using 52 chapters Arnzen's novel-of-cards is stacked with mischief and
thrills. Like the most accomplished blackjack dealer Arnzen will keep
you guessing at his hand. Are you ready to play?

"He
walked with a stooped gait, hair disheveled and his movements slow and
labored, like the reanimated corpse of one of the clansmen we'd read were
buried here. To see his shadow in the fog you wouldn't have thought him
threatening. But Neil and I knew better."

has come back to settle an old score.

you come for the hunt?"

SAVOR
THE DIABLO
Are you going to be in Toronto, Canada this week? Then you'd better get
there fast! Horror writer Brett Savory (CHIAROSCURO,
FILTHY DEATH THE LEERING CLOWN, THE DISTANCE TRAVELED) has a band:
The Diablo Red, playing
on August 5th at Club
Rockit in Toronto. The other act will be Electric
Magma.
The Diablo
Red is playing at a new place, and the promoter of the show is someone
they're trying to get in good with (he promotes
a lot of the bigger shows that come to Toronto, too). Brett says,
"If any of you haven't come out to see us yet, for whatever reason,
now would be an awesome time to show your support, as we'd like to impress
this guy, so that he'll have us back for more shows, and so that maybe
we'll get on some bigger shows in the near future. And even if you have
been out to see us a time or two, this show is especially important, so
please come support us!
Another reason
to come out is that we won't be playing live again until mid-October,
when we play at Club Rockit again at the book launch for THE
LAST PENTACLE OF THE SUN: WRITINGS IN SUPPORT OF THE WEST MEMPHIS THREE
(Arsenal Pulp Press).
