Dorff (THE GATE, INNOCENT LIES, BLOOD &

JULY 27 THE ADVENTURE
BEGINS The plan:
When I got into the Los Angeles Railway Union Station, Ken was waiting for me at one of the hall dining tables. As always, he was scribbling notes. Possibly on Big Chief note paper, I'm not sure. He invited me to sit down as we had some time before the train left. I bought a chili dog because, at Union Station, the chili is homemade and their chili dogs are the best on the west coast. While I'm eating, Ken is talking. While Ken is talking, the station speakers erupt to say, "Last call for train (X) leaving for San Diego!" LAST CALL? Where was the first call? Ken starts gathering his stuff, saying, "Well, I guess we'd better go." Our train was leaving on track 10. Now the thing about the Union Station is, its really damn long. So long that they have glorified golf carts to cart people to and fro - but they only have so many of these and try to save them for the handicapped folks. Possibly those with a handicap of 10.
So Ken and I have to suddenly grab all of our luggage and make our way down to track 10 ramp. It's a fair haul just to get to track one, but we'll be leaving 1 in our dust. Then up the ramp and down to our train. We make our way toward track 10 to find a veritable dearth of people waiting far, far down at the very end where track 10 wing opens to the right. We'll be the very last people on board and I'm hoping we'll be able to find a seat as Amtrak sells tickets right up to standing room only without prior warning. They do this as a surprise, betting that people just love surprises. We get up there and up the ramp. No train.Maybe we misheard. Maybe they said Track 11? We go back down the ramp and into the station. "Pardon us friendly train porter, where is train leaving for San Diego?" "It hasn't arrived yet. "Ken: "Oh, running late, eh?" Feo: "That can't be right." Porter: "It's on time. It will arrive at 10:00pm." Ken: "What about the 7:30 train to San Diego?" Porter: "It's on time too, and it left at 7:30. It's 7:40 right now." Ken: "Uh (teetering on mild despair)... man. When will the next train arrive in San Diego?" Porter: "Some time tomorrow morning."
Ken bloomed into such sudden anger that I thought he'd actually try and demand that the station call the train back. "We missed our train? WE MISSED OUR TRAIN? HOW COULD WE MISS OUR TRAIN?" I laughed because the situation couldn't be more comical, but that's just me. Ken: "You think this is funny, Feo?" Feo: "Sorry Ken: but this is good material! HA!" Ken doesn't always enjoy travelling with a former stand-up comic and this was one of those times. I prepared to haul my butt back down the long passageway into the main body of the station, but Ken stood there, not ready to accept the truth. We started the long walk back. By the time we got to track 5, Ken asked me to stop while he thought our situation through a little more. He stood there, trying to formulate a plan. A plan! A plan! Maybe if we...well, we could... But no, we missed our train. Now we wouldn't arrive at 8:35. We'd arrive at 12:50am the next morning! The folks who promised to wait and pick us up would have to wait until tomorrow morning, and wake up early (or not sleep at all) just to do us a favor and pick us up. And we'd have to get up later that morning to work the largest genre convention in the known universe! So, the trip started well. GETTING
AN EARLY START ON THE HORROR Next year, the World Horror Convention (WHC) will be held in New York City, and attendees can get a special discounted convention rate of $125 if they register before Labor Day, 2004. AMONG THE LIVING GEORGE ROMERO:
The godfather of zombies! This is a man who has made his career creating
new zombie fans while pleasing the old - but has actually done many types
of characters in his films. He's worked with amazing people, on great
projects, and is one of the men responsible for bringing horror to the
heights it has achieved... Read the entire interview here: Horror-Web's Horror Wench Interviews Romero.
JULY 20 JEFF IS
BACK, WITHOUT RHYME Paul Schumann, a German American living in New York City in 1936, is a mobster hitman known as much for his brilliant tactics as for taking only "righteous" assignments. But then Paul gets caught. And the arresting officer offers him a stark choice: prison or covert government service. Paul is asked to pose as a journalist covering the summer Olympics taking place in Berlin. He's to hunt down and kill Reinhard Ernst - the ruthless architect of Hitler's clandestine rearmament. If successful, Paul will be pardoned and given the financial means to go legit; if he refuses the job, his fate will be Sing Sing and the electric chair. Paul travels to Germany, takes a room in a boardinghouse near the Tiergarten - the huge park in central Berlin but also, literally, the GARDEN OF BEASTS - and begins his hunt. In classic Deaver fashion, the next forty-eight hours are a feverish cat-and-mouse chase, as Paul stalks Ernst through Berlin while a dogged Berlin police officer and the entire Third Reich apparatus search frantically for the American. GARDEN OF BEASTS is packed with fascinating period detail and features a cast of perfectly realized locals, Olympic athletes and senior Nazi officials - some real, some fictional. With hairpin plot twists, the reigning "master of ticking-bomb suspense" (People) plumbs the nerve-jangling paranoia of prewar Berlin and steers the story to a breathtaking and wholly unpredictable ending.

TEMPE
DVD BRINGS CULT APPEAL TO KC SALES WITH NEW PARTNERSHIP In its sophomore year, Tempe DVD branched out with two new labels: Bad Movie Police, a home for admittedly cheesy movies that are given a riotous MST3K-esque treatment by two buxom cops whose mission is to stamp out cine-terrorism, and Splatter Rampage, devoted to in-your-face horror-comedies more concerned with body count than dramatic content. The Tempe catalog will reach 25 releases by the end of 2004, featuring aggressive SRPs starting at $9.99 and collectible multi-packs aimed at budget-conscious consumers. This years lineup has thus far included a 10th Anniversary Special Edition of Bookwalters 1994 horror classic OZONE, an all-new documentary on ten B-movie actresses called SOMETHING TO SCREAM ABOUT and the home video debut of the 1992 drama EDDIE PRESLEY, which marked the companys first 2-Disc Special Edition. The film boasts an impressive lineup of genre celebrities headlined by Duane Whitaker (PULP FICTION) as well as cameos from KILL BILL director Quentin Tarantino and BUBBA HO-TEP star Bruce Campbell. Looking to further expand its horizons, Tempe has just inked an exclusive distribution agreement with Westlake Village, California-based KC Sales, likewise a fast-growing company that until now hasnt been particularly active with horror and cult titles. Bookwalter looks forward to changing all that, and Tempe will shortly expand its reach to Canada as well. Upcoming releases include the Canadian thriller THE BONESETTER (Aug. 31, prebook Aug. 6), the 1990 cult oddity GHOUL SCHOOL (Sept. 28, prebook Aug. 31) featuring early appearances by Ivan Sergei (TVs JACK & JILL and CROSSING JORDAN) as well as former Howard Stern sidekick Jackie The Joke Man Martling and the zany BAD MOVIE POLICE CASE #3: HUMANOIDS FROM ATLANTIS (Oct. 26, prebook Sept. 28). Tempe is also ready with fresh acquisitions for 2005 including the epic ZOMBIE PLANET and will kick off the new year with a remastered Special Edition of Bookwalters 1996 sci-fi actioner POLYMORPH. Actor Patrick Stewart ("TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY", THE PLAGUE DOGS, DUNE, LIFEFORCE, THE DOCTOR AND THE DEVILS, DEATH TRAIN, THE CANTERVILLE GHOST, STAR TREK: First Contact, CONSPIRACY THEORY, X-MEN, STAR TREK: Nemesis, X2) is 64. Patrick shares a July birthday with his producer from Conspiracy Theory, Joel Silver. Actor Harrison Ford (THE CONVERSATION, THE POSSESSED, APOCALYPSE NOW, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, BLADE RUNNER, INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, WITNESS, FRANTIC, INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, PATRIOT GAMES, THE FUGITIVE, WHAT LIES BENEATH) is 62. Musician Mark Mendoza (TWISTED SISTER) is 48. This next birthday boy had the handsome good looks of a Hollywood leading man and has had two TV shows with him as the lead character. Yet despite his long and active career, he has always flown just beneath the radar. Happy Birthday to Actor Robert Forster (THE DARKER SIDE OF TERROR [TV], THE BLACK HOLE, ALLIGATOR, GOLIATH AWAITS, SATAN'S PRINCESS, MANIAC COP 3, BODY CHEMISTRY III, SCANNER COP II, UNCLE SAM, JACKIE BROWN, OUTSIDE OZONA, SUPERNOVA, MULHOLLAND DRIVE, MURDER IN GREENWICH and way more) who is 63. JULY 8 LATE BREAKING
NEWS FROM C.K.L. In CHIM+HIM, the new Cyber Pulp release, Oxford-based author Hertzan Chimera collaborates with seven of the most stunning authors writing today: Simon Logan, Mark McLaughlin, Vincent W Sakowski, Greg Wharton, John Edward Lawson, MF Korn and DF Lewis. Hertzan Chimera loves to collaborate with other writers - it's a sort of fetish, a literary perversion. Over the last fourteen years, he has collaborated with numerous male and female writers online and in print. In his fifth book release this year, Hertzan Chimera (author of novels SZMONHFU and UNITED STATES, collections ANIMAL INSTINCTS and BFGS) shows how traditional 3-act narrative quivers in the shadow of the twisted maneuvres of combatative fiction, mano a mano. Earlier this year, Hertzan Chimera brought out his gut-wrenching book of female collaboration CHIM+HER, containing 24 collaborative stories with Charlee Jacob, Alex Severin, Destiny West, Amy Grech, Queenie Tirone, Brutal Dreamer, Dawn Andrews and Christina Sng. CHIM+HIM is a man thing; a testosterone dripping book that heaves and roars like some crazed beast. Chim+Him is a unique vision formed from many minds that elevates the art of literary collaboration to its rightful place at the top of the creative pile. All the horrors of modern living are explored in this holocaust of words, this nightmare of visuals, this illness. Never has such shared pain made it intact to the printed page. Collaboration is the true undiscovered country where opulent narrative lives and grows and is sometimes destroyed, reborn, mutated into a new monster in the mind of the other; the collaborator. Chim+Him is about black-humour in a world of grease-painted clowns, it's about life, it's definitely about death, it's definitely about the things you shouldn't talk about, the crazy dangerous places you shouldn't go. It's about literal freedom. It's about the new world beyond narrative, into the twisted minds of the collaborators themselves. By reading Chim+Him, you are drinking the raw, blended brainjuice of Chimera, Lewis, Korn, McLaughlin, Wharton, Sakowski, Lawson and Logan - this is the ultimate sacrifice of persona, the pure blood from stone. There are 25 collaborative stories in this Chim+Him, plus a bumper batch of 9 of the infamous Tricephallic collaborations of Chimera, Korn and Lewis. No other book brings their Tricephallic collection together. What could be more intimate than a three lobed brain? CHIM+HIM will be available in ebook, cd and TRADE PAPERBACK from Cyber Pulp books of Houston on July 4th in the States.
