JUNE JUNE 30
SOMETHING TO PARTY UPON The Chicago gang at Twilight Tales had a lot to celebrate the last Monday in June. John Everson, author and book designer for Twilight Tales, was fresh off the plane from L.A. where he'd won a Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a First Novel, for COVENANT (Delirium Books).
Another of Broderick's graphic novel noir mysteries, LOST CHILD, is being serialized Monday through Friday at the www.TwilightTales.com website. J.A. Konrath, recently nominated for the Macavity and Anthony Awards for best debut novel, for WHISKEY SOUR, read from his newly -released book, BLOODY MARY, (Hyperion). Konrath contributed the introduction to Broderick's SOMETHING TO BUILD UPON. After the readings and photo ops, the festivities continued with a music jam. HAPPY HORROR BIRTHDAY TO- Hey, anybody remember that young Heavy Metal kid, Yngwie Malmsteen? Ol' Viking Yngwie, like all super talented Nordic guitarists, never amounted to much in the US Music Media Market Circle, but he still plays one mean guitar and his albums still contain some of the best hardcore fretwork ever. If only you could find it. Musician Yngwie Malmsteen (RISING FORCE, MAGNUM OPUS, ALCHEMY, ODYSSEY, GENESIS, ATTACK) is 42.
JUNE 29 From Judi
Rohrig Yes, I'm another female (has he called any of the male winners?*) who this past weekend found herself being honored with a Bram Stoker Award. I am in my third year of publishing and editing HELLNOTES, which is a weekly newsletter that serves the horror community. Started in 1997 by David Silva and Paul Olsen, HELLNOTES has been serving the horror community without interruption. Garrett Peck served briefly as editor and publisher before I took over in February 2003. But let me tell you about my day of flying high. It was a very busy weekend, last weekend. Here I was knee-deep in research for a new work of fiction when our community's Freedom Festival called even more strongly than any Google search. You see, I'm a sucker for the Navy's Blue Angels. Cue Kenny Loggins' DANGER ZONE, please. Oh, I was there on the Ohio River Saturday for the fire and roar. Swoops, dives, and scare-the-hell-out-of-the-spectators-by-appearing-out-of-nowhere strafing. Ah, those Navy devilboys! Then the phone call came. Emergencies never happen at a convenient time, do they? So my family and I were off to Ohio where we were needed. The last thing on my mind when I finally checked e-mail sometime on Sunday was the Horror Writers Associations' Annual Conference happening the night before in Burbank, CA. The last thing on my mind was winning a Bram Stoker. In a few moments I had while waiting for things to happen, I checked my e-mail late Sunday. There they were, the headers: "Way to Go!" "Congratulations!" "Drum Roll!" "Ha! You Won!" I wish I could describe how I felt. I'm a female. I cried. I was a female in a stressful situation. I cried more. My family thought there was even more bad news. I still don't know what happened. How this year - after HELLNOTES had stood nominated under Dave and Paul, Garrett, and even me - could be honored as the Superior Achievement in Nonfiction. I just know I am grateful to everyone in the HWA who clicked on that little box that said HELLNOTES. Here is the message I gave Del Howison to read just in case Hell did freeze over: "Thanks to all the members of the HWA for honoring HELLNOTES. I know the staff and contributors to HELLNOTES - Mark Lancaster, Don Koish, Del Howison, Mike Arnzen, Edo van Belkom, Hank Wagner, Brian Hodge, Mark Justice, Ron Breznay, Sam Smith, Scott Nicholson, Michael Arruda, LL Soares, Chris Welch, Mike McCarty, Dave Wilbanks, Bill Gagliani, William Simmons, Steve Vernon, and Chris Wright - wish to thank the HWA as well for recognizing their efforts to keep the horror community enlightened as darkly as possibly. Thanks to Dave Silva and Paul Olson for entrusting their dream to me. Thanks, too, to all those wonderful and supportive subscribers who help our contributors earn compensation for their hard work and who read! Most of all, thank you so much from me. This makes the long hours at the computer worth it." As the Blue Angels no doubt know: "You'll
never know what you can do * Actually, no. Folks like Tom Piccirilli and John Everson have wisely kept their phone numbers to themselves. WHAT HAPPENED
TO THE ZOMBIES? Why is LAND doing so poorly? Our reviewer Kelly Parks has a theory in his review of LAND OF THE DEAD. This weekend, facing incredibly stiff competition from Steven Speilberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS and a second week of LAND OF THE DEAD, is the opening of UNDEAD. UNDEAD is an Australian Independent comedy tribute to George Romero that has been wowing audiences in the East Pacific rim. Distributed through Lion's Gate Films, UNDEAD will be having an acutely limited release in both the US and the UK. But like SHAUN OF THE DEAD, this one is worth seeking out. The poor audience response to Romero's latest film is causing nervousness among some who have their own zombies waiting in the wings, but as the remake of DAWN, plus SHAUN and now UNDEAD show, the zombies haven't died, they've just got younger! From Del Howison DARK TWILIGHT Do you plan to be in the Los Angeles, California area this weekend? On Sunday July 2nd at 2 p.m. Dark Delicacies will be holding a birthday party for author George Clayton Johnson who will be signing his books and spoken word CD's in honor of his 76th. Mr. Johnson was one of the original scriptwriters of the Twilight Zone television show and along with his short stories and scripts also co-wrote the book Logan's Run. Dark

HORROR BIRTHDAY TO-
JUNE 28 From Ellen
Datlow On the Tuesday before the Stoker weekend in LA, I decided that I'd better make up something to have someone read, just in case YBFH won. So I quickly wrote something from me and Kelly and Gavin and emailed it off to Lisa Morton saying: "I know it won't (win) but here you go anyway." So Saturday night I'm online (what else is new?!) and incidentally wondering if there's any news of the awards. Around midnight NYC time I notice Nick Kaufmann on the HWA BB and IM him, asking if he's heard anything. Nah, but he's was wondering the same thing - and a few minutes later he IM's me to say he's just heard Lee Thomas and John Everson have won in a tie for first novel. I get caught up in eBay noodling around, and suddenly it's 2am and I'm about to call it a night when I get an email from Lisa Morton saying: "Well, guess what - it did! Congrats, girl." I'm gobsmacked! And very pleased. :-) Hunting up the genre (and non-genre) magazines, anthologies, chapbooks, and collections every year and reminding or begging publishers to submit their material is frustrating and exhausting. Reading thousands of horror stories and poems is exhausting. Particularly as my full time job (fiction editor of SCIFI.COM) consists of reading and editing. Writing the summary is especially exhausting-and around February every year I feel burnt out and wonder why the hell I'm still doing it. Yeah, I get free books (and even though I try to get rid of most of them after I've read them, I have two storage lockers and an apartment filled with piles of books that are shoving me out) and I attract notice (positive and negative) by doing my job of choosing what I consider the "best." But for me, the real kick is having an influence on what people read. I'm a zealot. I admit it. When it comes to the stories and books and authors I think are terrific, I'll push them on anyone who will listen. And what a great pulpit the YBFH has been. I've had readers come up me over the years telling me that they discovered so and so in YBFH. Or they decided they wanted to write fantasy or horror because of the YBFH. How cool is THAT? This has been the last year YBFH will be eligible for the Stoker because a few months ago the membership voted to eliminate anthologies with less than 60% new material. I voted for the proposal but that doesn't mean I'm not pleased as punch to have won this year. Visit Ellen at scifi.com/scifiction QUICK BITES Robert S. Rhine (SELECTED READINGS FROM SATAN'S POWDER ROOM, SATAN GONE WILD) upcoming GIRLS AND CORPSES Magazine continues to get plenty of advance exposure. It will be featured in the October (Halloween) issue of Australian Penthouse - on newstands September 2005. STORIES FROM THE EDGE OUTSIDERS: 22 ALL-NEW STORIES FROM THE EDGE, to be published October 4th by Penguin/Roc, is now available for pre-order from most major online retailers. It includes my story "Running Beneath the Skin." In this knockout anthology, today's most important writers of speculative fiction cruise the abnormal elements of society and find a new wave of underground disorder, poignant horror, dirty kisses, and necessary anarchy. Including never-before published stories by: Neil Gaiman, Steve Rasnic Tem, Kathe Koja, David J. Schow, Bentley Little, Poppy Z. Brite, Joe R. Lansdale, Jack Ketchum, Melanie Tem, Tanith Lee, Caitlin R. Kiernan, Lea Silhol, Freda Warrington, Elizabeth Massie, Brett Alexander Savory, Katherine Ramsland, Yvonne Navarro, Thomas S. Roche, Michael Marano, John Shirley, Brian Hodge, and Elizabeth Engstrom ...all at their most brilliant and most outrageous. Here are dangerous games between lovers, howls from the dark, voyeurs and their victims, disturbed wishes and bitter dreams. Unflinching, uncommon, and underground, these tales vibrate with new life. Obviously, I'm beside myself with pride to be included among such writers, so for those of you who pick this one up, I hope you enjoy my contribution and think it worthy of inclusion. JUNE 20 BROKEN ANGELS ARE FLYING My new novel, Broken Angel, is now in print and available at Delirium Books, Shocklines.com, Clarksworld Books, and Amazon.com. For a full list of booksellers who have Broken Angel, check out my website. The lettered edition of Broken Angel is sold out, and the only available copy is at Camelot Books. Life in Clearwater was quiet, even a little dull for Grim, but it was better than the time he'd spent on the streets of Seattle. His biggest worry was being caught playing paintball in the salvage yard by Old Man Wallen. Then the strange girl arrived, abandoned at a roadside diner. Drugged, sick, with no memory of her past. For more on this and Brian's new collaboration with Mark McLaughlin and Shane Ryan Staley, check out Brian Knight.com. From Paul Kane FROM OUT OF THE SHADOWS Horror writer and editor, Paul Kane, announces the 2006 Horror Calendar he's co-editing for the British Fantasy Society. It features fiction by such well known authors as Clive Barker, Neil Gaiman, Muriel Gray, Stephen Gallagher, Graham Masterton, Christopher Fowler, Ramsey Campbell, Kelley Armstrong, Stephen Laws, Simon Clark, Poppy Z. Brite and John Connolly. The calendar will also be illustrated by the cream of genre artists, including a cover by Lord of the Rings, Constantine and Sin City artist Paul Campion. MICROSOFT
CENSORS FREEDOM I guess it serves the interests of Microsoft to insure that competition can't be born in other countries since Gates seems powerless to abort such births in the US. To be fair, Microsoft is not the first US company to assist dictators in repressing their people. The first US company that gave such solace to the Chinese government was Yahoo! in 2002. After that it was Google in 2004. Yes, Yahoo and Google are not all about Democracy, Human Rights, Freedom and all the other pabulum they fart on any given advertisement. Like Microsoft, they are solely about their wallet and it seems they have no concern in regards to how they fill it. This, that, and the other thing. There are those apologists that try to distract from this issue by pointing out that Bill Gates runs his own self-named charity that generously gives billions to needy people world wide. Some of those people Bill helps apparently need to oppress, arrest, and imprison members of their populace when someone uses words like Democracy, Human Rights, and Freedom. I wonder how much money Bill Gates tosses about to relieve some of the suffering he's causing? Will his charity pay for the bullets used to kill Chinese citizens who get caught, with Microsoft software, using words like Democracy, Human Rights, and Freedom a few too many times? Needless to say, neither NBC at msnbc.com or Newsweek online are reporting this. Not even at their ScienceTech section. Particularly absent among their own political bloggers. Especially absent at Chris Matthews HardBlah! (in fact, its rather pathetic to see how studiously they avoid the issue). This is mainly being reported by the rest of the world. And the world is reporting how American media companies are aiding oppressive governments in squeezing their people even harder. Hey world, don't hate us for our two-faced American companies, just stop dealing with them! Would you like to help Chinese citizens circumvent their government and the repressive will of some anti-American software companies? Check out peacefire.org and eff.org (yes that same entity you've always seen linked at the bottom of this page since 2000) to see how you can help for free! WITH THE CREEPERS As David explains on his CREEPERS website, he's been one of these types of people since his childhood. "In my afterword to CREEPERS, I describe how traumatic my childhood was and how I used to escape family arguments by exploring abandoned buildings. At the time, I figured I was the only person weird enough to do that." "When I checked the internet, I was amazed to discover thousands of sites devoted to urban explorers around the world. Their nickname is "creepers," which seemed a terrific title." Check out the full story at CREEPERS. BITES So after, out of sheer ego, I decided to check out my google ranking stats - how I rank with other Horror websites. To my surprise, my google ranking is equal to the big money folks at Fangoria.com, horror-web.com, queerhorror.com, upcominghorrormovies.com, Horror.net, and Horror.com, and the possibly, maybe, eventual horrorchannel.com! Pretty rotten folk with whom to room in the tomb! Coolness! Except I don't work out of a freaking skyscraper! I'm kinda like the Lloyd Kauffman of Horror Thriller websites. Or I would be if Lloyd didn't have his own website at Troma.com. Check my google stats by using the Page Rank feature of the Google toolbar. Don't have one? Get it Here. Unless you've had your head buried in the ground or up your gluteus maximus (that's yer ass!), you've read or heard the chest beating about The Patriot Act, our rights being taken away, the gagging of the free press, and especially the stringent laws governing our borders. Well, the first few are easily revealed for the lies they are. If things were that bad, how is it that we're hearing about it? How is it that both a well publicized fiction book and a well publicized play about the best way to murder our real and current president were permitted under such an oppressive system of martial law as we're supposed to have? As for laws governing our borders, check out the following story from the Washington Post Man With Stained Chain Saw Let in to U.S. The customs agents followed the law to the letter, and they HAD to let him in and let him go!
