NOMINATED FOR NATIONAL FICTION AWARD The Norumbega Fiction Awards are an annual literary competition founded by students at the University of Maine to recognize the work of unpublished writers, self-published writers, and small-press publishers. Their idea is to establish a prestigious award that gives cash prizes and plaques to talented writers who are under-represented in mainstream literary circles. The competition is held once a year and the winners are based on submissions nominated by writers and independent publishers. All nominations are judged equally on the following criteria: originality, strength of prose, strength of story, thematic approach, character development and overall quality as a work of literature. The awards are sponsored in full by Media Darlings Literature, Art & Sound. Norumbega is the name of the mythical city of gold believed to be near modern-day Bangor, Maine. Weaglys mixed genre collection, THE UNDERTOW OF SMALL TOWN DREAMS, chronicles the life and times of Currie Valley, a hazy little town that sits on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi. Its a quiet place, filled with ex-wrestlers, a bandit dreaming of glory and fame, a mistreated werewolf and love in a meteor shower. Weagly has had over thirty stage-plays produced by a variety of theaters across the country and his short fiction has frequently been published in national anthologies and specialty magazines, in both the mystery and horror genres. He has won several writing contests, and his short story, Shark Infested Pudding, was nominated for a Derringer Award for best short-short mystery of 2002. Norumbega Fiction Awards are given for Best Novel, Best Novella/Short Story Collection and Best Short Story. There is also a Jury Prize for Outstanding Fiction. Winners for this years awards will be announced October 1. For more information about the Norumbega Fiction Awards, go to www.mediadarlings.org. Well, not this one coming up, but the one after, on October 14th, Matthew Warner (THE ORGAN DONOR) is making a guest appearance at The Horror of Writing, The Thrill of Success & Failure: A Workshop on Horror Fiction & the Writing Life" Barnes & Noble in Annapolis Harbor Shopping Center 2512 Solomons Island Rd. Annapolis, Maryland, USA Thursday October 14th, 7 p.m. Fellow panelists include Douglas Winter, Brian Keene, and John Edward Lawson. Try not to forget about it when this news drops off of the front page, yeah?
SEPT. 2 By Tom
Piccirilli The novel deals with an ex-con who returns home to his backwoods mountain moonshine running town and finds his sister has died under strange circumstances on a dirt road supposedly haunted. He investigates and runs into plenty of oddball characters including a church of snake-handlers, a dwarf granny lady, ill children, a bunch of brain damaged moonshine swillers, ghosts of one sort or another, and Hellfire Christ. Of course you'll be the first to get ordering info as soon as it becomes available. I've sold a new collection of poetry to Fairwood Press (Patrick & Honna Swenson, the great folks who bring us Talebones) who are now breaking into the horror publishing field as well. They have a new subsidy line Darkwood Press whose first offering will be WAITING MY TURN TO GO UNDER THE KNIFE, a collection of 60 of my darkest poems that have never been collected before. Artwork by Caniglia (told you I love him!) with an introduction by TM Wright. You'll find two of them down below (cover your eyes, kids), made available only to the members of this list. I'll also be putting together a contest for you folks. Another chance to win free stuff! More info to follow. From the
jacket: "Now, in 2004, Piccirilli outdoes himself with his most personal poetry collection to date. Waiting My Turn To Go Under the Knife confronts us with some of our greatest fears. Piccirilli stabs and twists the knife deep so that we feel the emotion and power of every poem. "This collection features exquisite artwork by Caniglia, who has illustrated Piccirilli's work several times before. This signed and numbered hardcover has been limited to 250 copies." I'll be a guest at the HORRORFIND PHOENIX convention over Halloween weekend. If you're in attendance, step up and say hello to me and Michelle. I recently turned in the second anthology I've edited for Cemetery Dance. This one is entitled MIDNIGHT PREMIERE, and the theme of the antho deals with movies, actors, Hollywood, and ultra bizarre f/x. Contributors include Jack Ketchum, Gary Braunbeck, John Shirley, Al Sarrantonio, T.M. Wright, Tom Moneteleone, Mick Garris, Ed Gorman, Mark McLaughlin & Kyra Schon, Mike McCarty & Linnea Quigley, Del Howison & William Smith, Patrick Lussier, Carl Dupre, Gerard Houarner, Brian Hodge, Ray Garton, and Lisa Morton & Richard Grove. I'm currently at work on a new novel entitled HEADSTONE CITY, which will be my third book for Bantam. It's a little too early to give a story description, outside of the fact that it deals with a psychic mobster and his childhood friend who are on a collision course. Brooklyn cemeteries, ghosts, hitmen, and a shotgun-wielding grandma all come into play.
SOMEONE
PINCH HIM FROM THE
BORDERLANDS, edited by Elizabeth & Tom Monteleone (Warner Books) Brett's contributions are, respectively, "Slipknot" and "Shoes" (the latter co-written with Tim Lebbon). HAPPY
