HBO MAX Announces Strict Censorship By E.C. McMullen Jr.
In 2018, on my favorite month, October, Warner Bros. announced that they would be launching a "Over-the-Top" streaming service called HBO MAX.
Today HBO warns us HBO MAX will be much less Over-the-Top and much more Floating-Upside-Down. And to gently nudge things in that general direction in a pasteurized, homogenized way that is obsequious enough to not offend anyone, HBO MAX's latest acquisition, SOUTHPARK, will feature only censored, sanitized, versions of SOUTHPARK episodes.
In fact, 5 SOUTHPARK episodes, considered among their most popular, are banned.

38 years ago today, the best Science Fiction Horror movie of our time was released.

JOHN CARPENTER: Not A Week Goes By - By E.C. McMullen Jr.
Long time Feo Fans will note that I've said (and proved) that not a week goes by that John Carpenter does NOT make the news for his past work. Carpenter made plenty of movies after the 1980s, but the ten year period of 1978 (HALLOWEEN) to 1988 (THEY LIVE) is clearly his fertile ground where article writers are concerned.
And of that era, everything he made, except for his two TV movies of the time, remains in the news cycle, week after week, decades after their ignominous release, with his remake of THE THING (not an actual remake), appearing to be the most popular.
The 1980s weren't a glory time for John as the studios he made his movies for were crammed full of executives who had no idea how to sell his work.
What's more, the movie critics of that period castigated him relentlessly. One of the most popular voices, Roger Ebert, basically hated everything that Carpenter did - and Roger was the presumptive Horror fanboy of his many TV Show critical duos.
Excoriated by studios who didn't know how to sell his work, and critics who simply didn't understand his work, this was the period that, by Carpenter's own admission, broke him.
Yet despite that 10 years being a dark period for John Carpenter on a personal level, he was prolific and that era is treasured today.

'Cursed' Trailer: Prequel to the Farcical Aquatic Ceremony On July 17, Cursed premieres on Netflix, and now we have the trailer to clarify a bit what it will look like. It's based on the book of the same name by Thomas Wheeler, illustrated by Frank Miller — which is not, by the way, a graphic novel. Miller provides 38 illustrations (8 color, 30 black-and-white) within Wheeler's 416-page young-adult novel.

At his best, Joel loved to direct Mess-With-Your-Head movies, as witnessed in the aforementioned movies as well as FLATLINERS, FALLING DOWN, and TIGERLAND.
However, if there was ever a time that Joel went from "Mess With" to outright F*ck With Your Head, it was probably THE NUMBER 23.
It's not that THE NUMBER 23 was too convoluted to understand, but that the Writer Fernley Phillips, along with Director Joel Schumacher, created a movie that required the knowledge of a pretty thin slice of psychology, The Number 23 Enigma.
Come on! You can take a room full of smart knowledgeable people and they still aren't going to know everything about everything!
The insanity pushing psychological obsession is real enough, however, with people from Umberto Eco (THE NAME OF THE ROSE) to H.R. Giger (ALIEN), as well as actor Jim Carrey (THE NUMBER 23), being known to experience it.

When faced with a holographic shark from JAWS 19, in Back To The Future II, Marty McFly quips, "The shark still looks fake."
Spoiler alert: there is no Jaws 19, and this scene is mostly a joke about 1987's Jaws: The Revenge, the third sequel to the 1975 smash-hit. Marty's partially right: the shark in Jaws: The Revenge looks fake. The first shark in the original Jaws does not. That's because you barely see it.
Something can't look fake if its presence is mostly implied, right?

38 Years of John Carpenter's THE THING By E.C. McMullen Jr.
For big budget movie that crashed and burned nearly half a century ago, pummeled in the summer of Stephen Spielberg's blockbuster One Two punch of POLTERGEIST and E.T., John Carpenter's THE THING is astoundingly resilient.
History shows that this, in fact, is the way of the Carpenter (even to John's bemused amazement). John had so many theatrical flops that, over time, grew into behemoths in the public consciousness. Then his movies (ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, THEY LIVE, IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS) went on to overshadow and crush the legacies of those movies that stole the show in their initial release.
THE THING wasn't the only now classic movie trounced by Spielberg that summer long ago, so was Ridley Scott's BLADE RUNNER.

41 Years of ALIEN By E.C. McMullen Jr.
Seriously now! We're talking about an enthusiastic fanbase of the grandchildren of the kids who first saw this movie in 1977! And even they are only interested in the first two (thanks in large part to another J.C. whose name isn't John Carpenter)! Lead actor, Sigourney Weaver is 71 now and there is still talk for another ALIEN movie with Sigourney?
Even Sigourney, long burnt on all the crap ALIEN sequels she signed up for (and not particularly happy with the crap GHOSTBUSTERS sequels so far), is having her doubts about wanting to play Ripley again.
I'm not saying that a great ALIEN sequel couldn't be made with Sigourney in the starring role. I'm only saying that the stewards of the ALIEN franchise have spent nearly a half century proving beyond all doubt that they could never pull it off.
Still, late 1970s early 1980s Horror movies remain the high bar by which all Hollywood studio Horror movies since are judged and found wanting.

THE MATRIX 4: Who Will Keanu Be? By E.C. McMullen Jr.
In THE MATRIX, Neo was "The One". But it was made clear from the outset that he wasn't the First One or even the Only One. He's basically an intentional glitch (The One may have began as an accidental glitch, but once allowed to continue, it became intentional). Now even though the movie never revealed - despite ponderous exposition throughout all three movies - why The Matrix would want or benefit from such a glitch, that is established canon.
That means that all humans born within The Matrix have predetermined machine minds. Their identities didn't organically grow over time in their biological bodies but were put there by the machines.
The Oracle alluded to this during her and Neo's first conversation regarding destiny.
I'd like to think that MATRIX 4 will be a prequel and Keanu Reeves is going to play the original The One. The One who first realized what The Matrix was and helped others to escape it. It was never suggested that the first One escaped The Matrix himself and this will save time and money digitally making Keanu appear as young as he was over 20 years ago.
The Cool factor, for me, comes from the idea that John Wick is The First One. So all three movies are moving toward Wick realizing that his ability to transcend the physical, and the limits of his human body, leads to his inevitable discovery of The Matrix.
But that's just me.
