32 Years of ARACHNOPHOBIA
By the late 1980s, Producer Frank Marshall (RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, POLTERGEIST, GREMLINS, WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT) was known as a successful, but difficult producer to please. He'd come to the set in the early morning while the crew was setting up, and tell the director that they didn't have the budget for the Big "X", so figure out a way to get all the shots done without it. Frank developed a frustrating style, saying, "My job is to put you inside a box every day. It's your job to get out of it." Directors began to murmer, "What does Frank know about directing, anyway?"
Then Frank directed the wildly successful ARACHNOPHOBIA. Then he followed that up with two more successes. Point proved, he went back to being a successful Producer (THE SIXTH SENSE, SIGNS, JURASSIC WORLD).
So here we are, 32 years later and still going strong. Who knew that Frank's goofy, off-the-cuff Creepy Crawly would have such long legs? /ARACHNOPHOBIA.

There's a good reason why BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT are the two best Batman movies ever. It has nothing to do with the date of release and certainly nothing to do with the death of The Joker actor, Heath Ledger. His death prior to the movie's release makes this franchise tragic and bittersweet in memory, but adds nothing positive to why this movie is so great. This is why /THE DARK KNIGHT excels.

Thanks to the success of New Line Cinema's BLADE, 20th Century Fox finally gave their X-MEN movie, that languished in development hell for decades, the greenlight and the budget it needed. It became a hit and X2: UNITED proved it was no fluke. Fox had a winner. As was typical with the pre-Disney 20th Century Fox Corporate Culture, they immediately set about trying to destroy their cash cow and succeeded with X-MEN III. Not content to take a chance that the franchise may rise again, 20th Century Fox buried it so deeply that it seemed the franchise would never have another chance and the main actors washed their hands of it.
Leaping at the chance to make a final movie where they could kill off the characters that actors Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman enlivened, 20th Century Fox executives took their eye off the ball and accidentally made a compelling smash hit that wrapped the franchise. Fox's poor stewardship of pretty much everything in their catalog from PLANET OF THE APES to Star Wars to ALIEN to Marvel made them ripe for plucking and Disney plucked them good.
The value of 20th Century Fox had nothing to do with their curb-kicking their famous franchises and everything to do with the value of those first films.
22 years ago today, we were there and this is what thrilled theater audiences in X-MEN.

A runaway asteroid dubbed "The Outsider" mysteriously begins orbiting the Earth and threatens it with lethal flying saucers. Filmed in Italy at the height of the country's sci-fi craze, this independent classic stars Golden Age-star Claude Rains (Casablanca, The Invisible Man, Notorious), Bill Carter, Umberto Orsini, Maya Brent, Jaqueline Derval and Renzo Palmer. Cinematography by Marcello Masciocchi.
